Job Description
We are seeking a high-energy, detail-oriented Controller to lead our financial reporting and operational accounting functions. You will be responsible for overseeing the full cycle of accounting, ensuring rigorous internal controls, and providing the financial clarity needed to drive continued growth across our nationwide operations. This is a pivotal role for a CPA who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys mentoring a dedicated team of financial analysts. This is a 100% remote contract role for 2-3 months with the possibility of extension or conversion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes, ensuring all financial statements and executive reporting packages are accurate and delivered within tight deadlines.
- Manage and mentor a team of financial analysts, fostering a collaborative environment and driving performance management.
- Coordinate and lead the annual external audit process and assist with market audits as required, serving as the primary point of contact for auditors.
- Oversee trust accounting, ensuring trust receivables and trust payables over 90 days are kept to a minimum and any issues are resolved in a timely manner.
- Own cash management and internal control over cash-related policies, including the design and maintenance of cash flow forecasts.
- Design and implement business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls and safeguard company assets.
- Maintain and improve the financial reporting system and accounting system (Microsoft Dynamics/Great Plains/NetSuite), including the GL chart of accounts and accounting mapping.
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase accountability and reduce delays across the reporting cycle.
- Oversee tax compliance, ensuring all provincial and federal corporate tax requirements are met.
Qualifications & Experience:
- CPA (CA, CGA, or CMA) designation is required.
- 3–5 years of experience in a Financial Controllership role, with a demonstrated ability to bring discipline and structure to a high-volume environment.
- Previous experience in the Insurance Industry (specifically with MGA operations) is highly preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Dynamics/Great Plains and advanced Excel skills (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs).
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Soft Skills: A "hands-on" leader who can zoom out for strategy but zoom in for technical troubleshooting. You possess a strong ownership mindset, excellent communication skills for explaining financial results to non-finance stakeholders, and the ability to manage conflicting priorities effectively.
