The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC), a national union representing over 80,000 professionals and scientists across Canada, is seeking an Systems Administrator - DevOps to join our team at our National Office in Ottawa.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Under the direction and supervision of the Manager, Information Technology (IT) Operations the Systems Administrator - DevOps ensures optimal implementation and operation of cloud infrastructure and system administration of the Institute’s IT systems. The position is responsible for planning, configuring, maintaining, troubleshooting and leveraging advanced technologies. The position ensures that Institute systems are functional, up-to-date, secure, and user-friendly while facilitating and supporting the ongoing enhancement and transformation of these systems.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for current and new technologies and respond to service requests from various stakeholders.
  • Stay current on latest developments in cloud-computing, DevOps practices, current and trending technology by conducting technical research to evaluate technology evolution and associated threats and opportunities.
  • Lead the implementation, hands-on deployment, maintenance and upgrades of highly available, scalable, and secure systems across AWS and SaaS platforms (e.g., AWS, Google workspace, Zoom), supporting business continuity and growth.
  • Work closely with IT staff to ensure efficient operation of systems and continuous improvement and delivery of products and processes.
  • Oversee cyber security and information security implementations including patch management, identity management, intrusion prevention and platform vulnerabilities.
  • Develop and maintain observability, deployment and automation tools to manage a growing number of services.
  • Collaborate with software development teams to design, automate, and streamline deployment pipelines, ensuring reliable and repeatable application delivery.
  • Provide guidance to team members and facilitate their adoption and integration of IT DevOps best practices.
  • Manage server/storage deployments, maintenance and implement upgrades.
  • Install, configure, monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and backup system to ensure functionality, data consistency, security, and usability.
  • Identify potential issues in system performance and implement solutions.
  • Develop, maintain and ensure adherence to IT policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for system use that reflect good practices, including system configurations, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Research and recommend new technology and best practices based on business requirements with regards to information technologies, growth and transformation to enhance process efficiency, improve user satisfaction, increase security and/or reduce cost.
  • Monitor system resource utilization and trending and undertake capacity planning.
  • Collaborate with other IT staff and key stakeholders to design, develop, maintain and support new technologies.
  • Participate in forecasting and planning system upgrades to meet business needs.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams assigned to special projects and work collaboratively with employees in other sections.
  • May be requested to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis.

Knowledge and Experience Requirements

Competencies sought:

  • Experience leading work on technology based efforts to achieve desirable outcomes working with both the technical team and business customers
  • Self-starter and can assess needs and then do research to determine appropriate solutions considering all affected technology

Education / Experience:

  • University degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration or equivalent.
  • Five (5) to eight (8) years’ experience including a minimum of five (5) years of progressive AWS experience

Certification:

  • Current AWS Associate or Professional Certification, or equivalent certification, is required.
  • Project management certification is considered an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in both official languages (French and English) is an asset
  • English is required

Skills and experience required:

  • Broad Knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS),
  • Strong Knowledge of Google Workspace and/or Zoom SaaS solutions,
  • Extensive experience with Linux and bash scripting,
  • Windows Server OS knowledge/experience is an asset,
  • Good understanding of ITIL best-practices,
  • Experience in a user-focused technical-support environment,
  • Self-motivated and initiative to get tasks completed and issues resolved,
  • Demonstrated ability in system analysis, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting,
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, including creation of technical documentation and SOPs,
  • Ability to deal with competing priorities,
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Assets:

  • knowledge of Microsoft-based Identity and Access Management / Device Management solutions, particularly Azure AD and Intune
  • knowledge of Cisco network solutions, including Meraki.

Compensation Package

  • Salary Range: $98,519 - $123,148 (G6)
  • Group Benefits (Health, Dental)
  • Vacation (4 weeks/year) and other generous paid leave
  • Paid time off from December 27th to 31st

Note

Preference will be given in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the IAM Local 3011 bargaining unit.
