Cost Controller – Major Capital Projects

Location: Northern Ontario

Rotation: 7 Days On / 7 Days Off

Employment Type: Contract

Position Overview

Our client, a leading mining organization, is seeking an experienced Cost Controller to support a major capital program in Northern Ontario. Reporting to the Project Controls Lead, the Cost Controller will be responsible for providing cost management, forecasting, reporting, earned value analysis, and project controls support across multiple capital projects.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring accurate project cost performance, maintaining robust forecasting processes, supporting change management activities, and delivering timely financial reporting to project stakeholders.

This position requires a collaborative professional who can work closely with project managers, engineering, procurement, construction, and finance teams within a fast-paced capital projects environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and monitor project budgets, forecasts, and cost control structures for major capital projects.
  • Track actual costs, commitments, accruals, and forecasts against approved budgets and identify cost variances.
  • Prepare monthly cost reports, cash flow forecasts, financial dashboards, and project performance reports for project leadership.
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of Estimate at Completion (EAC) and Estimate to Complete (ETC) forecasts.
  • Perform variance analysis and provide explanations, recommendations, and mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor project expenditures and ensure cost information is accurate, timely, and aligned with project progress.
  • Support change management processes by assessing the cost and schedule impact of scope changes and maintaining change logs.
  • Ensure alignment between project costs, schedules, and physical progress.
  • Apply Earned Value Management (EVM) principles, including CPI and SPI analysis, to monitor project performance.
  • Collaborate with project managers, project controls, procurement, engineering, and construction teams to gather and validate project data.
  • Support invoice reviews, commitments, accruals, and cost coding activities.
  • Maintain accurate cost records and ensure compliance with internal controls and governance requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits by maintaining complete and audit-ready project documentation.
  • Assist with the continuous improvement of project controls processes, procedures, and reporting tools.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Finance, Business, Accounting, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in cost control, project controls, or project management controls on major capital projects.
  • Previous experience in mining, heavy industrial, energy, nuclear, infrastructure, or EPC/EPCM environments.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Project budgeting and forecasting
  • Cost reporting and variance analysis
  • Earned Value Management (EVM)
  • EAC and ETC forecasting
  • Change management and cost impact assessments
  • Cost and schedule integration
  • Financial governance and project controls processes
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary project teams in a capital projects environment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a dynamic project environment.
