NAFSA Association of International Educators is the world’s largest association of professionals committed exclusively to advancing international education and exchange. The association provides professional development opportunities, promotes research and knowledge, and convenes conference and collaborative dialogues.

The Public Policy team, which includes grassroots advocacy and media relations, leads NAFSA’s efforts to advocate for policies that foster the exchange of ideas, create a commonsense immigration process, and encourage global engagement. This internship is ideal for students who are seeking careers in public policy, government relations, advocacy, media relations, or international education, and is an excellent opportunity to experience working in a nonprofit association.

Summer 2026 Intern Projects (June through August):

  • Contribute to the collecting and publishing of international education “success stories” including high profile/high impact international student and scholars and U.S. study abroad participants
  • Support NAFSA’s contributions to the U.S. for Success Coalition, including research, writing and administrative responsibilities
  • Utilize congressional management system to track outreach & positive actions by members of Congress
  • Assist staff in researching and reporting on legislation and regulations affecting international education
  • Attend meetings, briefings, and hearings on Capitol Hill (virtual or in-person)
  • Assist in preparation and dissemination of press releases and statements
  • Write for NAFSA’s blog, social media tools, and member communications
  • Assist in planning and executing events, such as Advocacy Day, Hill briefings or related to the annual conference
  • Compile and analyze major news media coverage relevant to NAFSA’s work, including issues related to international education, higher education, immigration, and foreign policy

The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented self-starter; proficient with Microsoft Office suite applications, especially Excel and Word; experienced with customer service; adept with Zoom and social media platforms; and have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills. Preferred candidates will have a strong interest in and knowledge of public policy, U.S. government and politics, immigration, or international relations, and Capitol Hill or related experience.

Compensation: $18.00/hour for 20 hours per week with opportunity for holiday, retirement benefits, if eligible.

To be considered, you must be able to demonstrate that you are authorized to work in the US without requiring NAFSA’s sponsorship. We welcome students with valid work authorization wishing to complete their experiential learning through their established curricular practical training (CPT), optional practical training (OPT) or academic training eligibility.
