Position Summary
Paid-On-Call Firefighters respond to emergency situations protecting people, the environment and property from all types of occurrences. This position involves firefighting, rescue, and patient care performed under the direction and supervision of fire officers. When not involved in emergency events, firefighters participate in training and community public education events.
Responsibilities
- Responds safely to emergency calls.
- Drives, operates, and maintains emergency equipment, including personal vehicles, safely and in accordance with policies, guidelines, and applicable legislation.
- Uses proper firefighting and rescue techniques, enters burning or contaminated structures or other areas to effect rescue and preserve life and property.
- Provides advanced medical care prior to EMS arrival.
- Respects and follows the departmental chain of command, complying with direction provided by ranking department officers.
- Makes recommendations and communicates through the chain of command regarding general concerns, operational guidelines, equipment maintenance, etc.
- Dons, maintains, and properly uses all assigned personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Deals with the public in a polite, sympathetic, and respectful manner.
- Always maintains a high degree of confidentiality and refrains from disclosing municipal-specific information to the news, social media or to other persons without authorization from the Fire Chief.
- Maintains a level of physical fitness necessary to carry out all the duties of a firefighter.
- Performs all activities in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, along with corporate safety policies, guidelines and programs.
- Maintains a personal duty book as directed.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Ontario High School Diploma.
Experience
- Minimum one-year experience in the field of construction and/or various skilled trades, emergency medicine, large vehicle operation, fire prevention, firefighting or equivalent.
- Past and/or current community involvement, such as volunteering, mentoring, teaching, etc.
Specialized Training & Licences
- Current First Aid/CPR and S-AED certification.
- Currently hold or willing to complete the NFPA 1001 Level I and II Firefighter Training and NFPA 472/1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations program within one (1) year of employment (costs assumed by municipality).
Skills & Abilities
- Possesses knowledge of provincial legislation, regulations, and standards (Ontario Building Code, Fire Code and related Acts and regulations).
- Demonstrated knowledge of modern firefighting and fire prevention methods, public education and emergency management, rescue and first aid procedures, rules, and equipment.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively as a member of an effective and professional team.
- Must complete the Firefighter Services of Ontario clinical and medical assessments, including an acrophobia and claustrophobia skills test along with a fire-specific confidence course (costs assumed by municipality).
- Have developed administrative and enhanced computer skills, including computer literacy using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Have a strong desire to serve the community, possess a strong work ethic, sense of loyalty and duty, coupled with the ability and willingness to follow direction promptly and efficiently.
Other Requirements
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Valid Ontario class G driver’s license in good standing.
- Currently hold or willing to attain an Ontario class DZ driver’s license.
- Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Criminal Records Check.
- Able to lift 30 kg.
- Must live and/or work near one of Middlesex Centre’s five fire stations. The expectation from the time of being paged to arriving on scene, in most cases, is not more than 10 minutes.
- Meet attendance minimums, in alignment with established policies and operating guidelines, for weekly training, events and emergency calls.
- Must be available during the day and/or night to respond to emergencies.
Hours & Conditions of Work
This is an on-call position which includes work after-hours due to emergency response, training, and meetings.
This position primarily works out of the fire station and is present in the community for emergency response and public education.
This position requires the ability to think and act strategically with sound judgment in emergency and stressful situations. This position requires physical skills and stamina and includes exposure to outdoor elements.
Compensation
This is a paid-on-call position.
