Mechanical Engineer- R&D - ( Modular Buildings )
Modulus HousingJob Description
Mechanical Engineer – R&D (Foldable Cabin & Modular Systems)🌍 About Us
At MBT R&D, we are reimagining how people build. Our mission is to develop Modular Building Technology (MBT) that makes construction intuitive, fast, reliable, and scalable.
We believe buildings should be engineered like products—designed with precision, manufactured efficiently, and assembled effortlessly. Our goal is to create systems that are both technologically advanced and simple to deploy, transforming built spaces into powerful extensions of human imagination.
We are a small, focused, and ambitious team committed to pushing the boundaries of construction technology. If you enjoy tackling difficult engineering challenges and translating scientific ideas into real-world systems, this is the place for you.
🚀 Role Overview
We are seeking a high-ownership Mechanical Engineer to lead research and development for our next-generation foldable cabin system and snap-fit steel connection mechanisms.
This is not a traditional design role. You will be responsible for inventing, prototyping, testing, and refining mechanical systems that enable modular, rapidly deployable structures.
From early concept sketches to field-ready prototypes and manufacturing optimisation, you will play a key role in building what we aim to become one of the most advanced foldable cabin systems in the world.
This role requires someone who is hands-on, resourceful, and driven to solve complex engineering challenges.
🎯 Key ResponsibilitiesResearch & Concept Development
- Explore new concepts in foldable structures, modular systems, and snap-fit steel connection mechanisms.
- Apply principles from structural mechanics, material science, and applied physics to develop innovative solutions.
- Conduct technical research to evaluate design feasibility and performance.
Design & Simulation
- Develop 3D models and engineering designs using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Perform structural, fatigue, kinematic, and motion simulations using tools such as ANSYS or Abaqus.
- Optimize designs for structural safety, ease of assembly, durability, and manufacturing efficiency.
Prototyping & Testing
- Build and test working prototypes of foldable cabins and modular connection systems.
- Work closely with workshop teams to fabricate, troubleshoot, and refine prototypes.
- Conduct validation testing to evaluate performance under real-world conditions.
Manufacturing Research & Process Development
- Evaluate and develop manufacturing methods for topology-optimised precast elements and steel components.
- Research advanced fabrication techniques such as precision precast fabrication, modular assembly systems, concrete extrusion, or high-pressure moulding.
- Develop scalable processes to ensure precision, repeatability, and cost efficiency in production.
Collaboration & Execution
- Drive independent research tracks with high ownership and minimal supervision.
- Collaborate with structural engineers, architects, materials scientists, and product designers.
- Clearly communicate design insights, test results, and engineering decisions to stakeholders.
🛠️ QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of structural mechanics, kinematics, and materials science.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and engineering simulation tools such as ANSYS or Abaqus.
- Experience with mechanical prototyping, fabrication, and iterative testing.
- Familiarity with modern fabrication methods and modular structural systems.
💡 Mindset & Traits (Important)
We are looking for engineers who demonstrate:
High Ownership
You take initiative, identify problems early, and take responsibility for solving them.
Builder Mindset
You enjoy turning ideas into physical prototypes and real-world systems.
Curiosity & First-Principles Thinking
You challenge assumptions and solve problems through experimentation and engineering fundamentals.
Collaborative Spirit
You thrive in a multidisciplinary environment and value strong teamwork.
Mission Alignment
You are motivated by the opportunity to transform how the world builds.
🌟 Why Join Us
- Work on technology that has never been built before.
- Help shape the future of modular housing and construction systems.
- Be part of a small, ambitious, and fast-moving R&D team.
- Take direct ownership of high-impact engineering projects.
- Contribute to solutions that could improve housing access for millions of people.
