Job Description
- The US Medical Science Liaison, Advanced Diagnostics serves as a field-based scientific expert supporting Waters Advanced Diagnostics across its clinical diagnostics portfolio.
- This may include any of the following dependent upon business needs: ID/AST, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, laboratory automation and informatics, point-of-care testing, LC-MS-based clinical testing, and new-born screening solutions.
- This role is responsible for leading scientific exchange with key external stakeholders, supporting Medical Affairs initiatives, and helping translate diagnostic insights into clinically meaningful action for laboratories, clinicians, pharmacists, and health-system leaders.
- The MSL will engage stakeholders across diverse testing environments and care settings, while also supporting broader portfolio awareness and scientific pull-through across the Advanced Diagnostics business.
- A key differentiator of this role is the ability to connect diagnostic technologies and test results to clinical relevance, laboratory workflow, implementation, and real-world utility.
- Success in this position requires scientific credibility, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to communicate the value of diagnostics in a way that is meaningful to both laboratory and clinical audiences.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead scientific and clinical support for Waters Advanced Diagnostics’ portfolio across priority disease states, testing environments, and customer segments.
- Execute strategic scientific, educational, and external engagement initiatives aligned with Medical Affairs and broader business priorities.
- Conduct high-quality scientific exchange with healthcare professionals, including clinical microbiologists, laboratory directors, pathologists, infectious disease clinicians, pharmacists, hospital decision-makers, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Support KOL identification, engagement, and relationship development through advisory boards, scientific meetings, educational programs, investigator interactions, and other compliant Medical Affairs activities.
- Develop and deliver scientific education for external stakeholders and internal cross-functional teams, including training on disease-state fundamentals, diagnostic technologies, workflow considerations, clinical utility, and interpretation of diagnostic data.
- Serve as a scientific partner to customers by helping translate assay performance, workflow advantages, and diagnostic capabilities into clinically and operationally meaningful applications.
- Monitor and communicate scientific literature, competitive intelligence, diagnostic trends, and emerging clinical or laboratory practice changes relevant to Waters Advanced Diagnostics’ portfolio.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Medical Affairs, Clinical Affairs, Commercial, Market Access, and other internal partners to support evidence generation, HCP education, and field medical strategy.
- Capture field insights related to unmet needs, evidence gaps, adoption barriers, and stakeholder perceptions to help inform medical strategy and future evidence-generation priorities.
Required Qualifications
Advanced clinical/scientific degree such as:
- PhD
MD / DO
PA-C / NP
DCLS
MLS
Laboratory science background with significant field-facing experience
- Minimum 3 years of clinical, pharmaceutical, diagnostics, laboratory medicine, or related healthcare experience.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific and clinical information effectively to diverse stakeholders.
- Experience educating healthcare professionals and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong knowledge of ID/AST, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, clinical laboratory workflows, and/or diagnostic technologies used in regulated healthcare settings.
- Ability to work independently in a field-based role.
- Remote, field-based role with anticipated travel of approximately 50%-60%, depending on geography, customer needs, and meeting/congress/conference activity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as an MSL, clinical scientist, laboratory scientist, pharmacist, direct patient care, or in a field-based medical/scientific role.
- Experience working with clinical microbiology laboratories, molecular diagnostics, hospital laboratories, pathology/lab medicine teams, or diagnostic implementation efforts.
- Familiarity with diagnostic technologies and workflows relevant to ID/AST, microbiology, molecular testing, automation/informatics, point-of-care testing, LC-MS-based clinical diagnostics, or new-born screening.
- Strong presentation skills and experience supporting scientific education for internal and external audiences.
- Experience translating technical or scientific data into relevant clinical, laboratory, or operational value for customers.
