Role Description

Mercom India is a well-known, respected research and communications firm focused on delivering critical information on renewable energy. With growing environmental issues and air pollution concerns, India is shifting from dirty fossil fuels to clean energy technologies. We are looking for a reporter who wants to be part of a dynamic online news portal (mercomindia.com) focused on renewable and clean technologies in India, who is excited to be part of the solution and change India's energy and environmental future. The ideal candidate will be expected to write, edit and proofread articles, blog posts, and press releases on renewable energy topics and market trends. We are looking to create the best resource for renewable energy news in India.

The ideal candidate will have experience covering energy or business stories in India and will be able to analyze data, news and trends, and develop original content. The candidate will report on the news on tight deadlines. The job will involve working with colleagues across India and abroad to ensure comprehensive market coverage.

The candidate will be responsible for breaking news, covering important stories about companies of all sizes, government policies, and technologies, and contributing multiple stories each week, all written in the right tone. The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of news writing experience and be excited to be part of the dynamic sector of India’s renewable energy growth story.

· Write and publish multiple articles on a daily basis, ranging from quick to covering the latest on a breaking news event with photos

· Write daily and long-term stories, including reported pieces and detailed analysis for the news website and our weekly newsletter/reports

· Develop fresh angles and offer new insights for readers. Report news on tight deadlines, which includes making calls, asking tough questions, and aggressively pursuing a story when needed

· Call on various government agencies to get the appropriate information and news

· Stay on top of and follow up on current events coming out of the clean energy sector

· Must be able to develop sources/relationships to call on for quotes and information

· This position is based in Bangalore

Desired profile of the candidate:

· Must have superior writing and editing skills coupled with the demonstrated ability to present information concisely and clearly at an appropriate level of sophistication

· Must have strong interview skills, with an ability to extract relevant information about technical and complex topics and turn it into easy-to-understand written content

· Must be able to analyze data, news and trends, and write concise articles that are compelling and easy to understand

· Must be able to monitor and identify news on a daily basis and break news as often as possible

· Must be internet savvy and have the ability to carry out qualitative online research

· Experience in writing financial and technical articles, in American-style English writing a plus

· Journalistic and reporting background necessary

· Knowledge and familiarity with online publishing tools, WordPress, and HTML a plus

· The candidate should have an eagerness to learn and adapt to new situations and different environments

· Must be able to travel occasionally anywhere in India

· Should be a voracious reader of business news and current events

· Must be strong in ethical values and social conduct

· Must be an excellent fact checker and should have the ability to verify all the news items from various sources

· Must be proactive and able to work independently

· Must be organized, able to meet deadlines and juggle various tasks while at the same time maintaining a high level of attention to detail and sustaining overall quality

· Must be creative, flexible and willing to do what it takes to deliver a finished product

Qualifications

• Strong skills in Reporting and News Writing
• Proficiency in Writing and Communication, with excellent command of the English language
• Experience in creating and working with Multimedia content
• Ability to analyze and report on complex topics with accuracy and clarity
• Strong research skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced newsroom environment
• Degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field is preferred
• Familiarity with clean energy markets or prior experience in similar industries is a plus
