Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, performs routine and specialized mammographic procedures.
- Demonstrates basic clinical competency in mammography to provide services for patients of all ages while adhering to radiation safety and organizational policies. Applies knowledge of mammographic principles and practices, including anatomy and physiology, radiation safety and physics, mammographic positioning, and patient care. Demonstrates advanced imaging skills and works independently to support interventional mammography procedures, including room setup, radiologist assistance, and preparation of laboratory specimens.
- Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement initiatives designed to enhance workflows, patient experience, quality, and safety. Actively participates in student and employee training and educational activities.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and prepared work environment, including cleaning and preparing patient rooms. Maintains supplies and inventory within the department. Prepares contrast administration areas (if applicable) and invasive procedure areas using aseptic techniques and sterile processes in accordance with established protocols.
- Communicates effectively with patients, obtains patient histories, answers questions, and explains procedures to ensure patient understanding and comfort.
- Ensures the proper maintenance and operation of equipment, performs quality control procedures, and promptly reports equipment or environmental issues.
- Provides patient education and support, including preparing patients for procedures and addressing their physical and psychological needs. Escalates concerns through appropriate channels.
- Prioritizes patient flow and coordinates care through consistent communication with patients, care teams, and families. Documents patient care activities in various electronic health record systems and distributes final images to the PACS/Breast Information System in a timely manner for interpretation.
- Consistently acts and communicates professionally, embodying the organization's SPIRIT values and fostering a respectful and supportive environment for patients, families, and colleagues. Adheres to ARRT Standards of Ethics.
- Applies knowledge of mammographic principles and practices, including anatomy and physiology, radiation safety and physics, mammographic positioning, and patient care. Adheres to departmental policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety requirements while complying with federal, state, professional, and accreditation regulations.
- Follows direction from leadership, ensuring adherence to all protocols, maintaining patient flow, and seeking clarification when necessary.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate's degree required; or
- Certificate in Radiologic Technology (earned before January 1, 2015) from a program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) required.
Experience
- Four (4) or more years of experience with invasive breast procedures (e.g., needle localization, contrast-enhanced procedures, and biopsies) required.
Licenses and Certifications
- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification in Mammography [ARRT(M)] required.
- State licensure/certification for Maryland or Virginia, if applicable, required upon hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification required upon hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of radiographic theory and techniques, with a strong understanding of specialized and complex mammographic procedures.
- Ability to work effectively in stressful and emergent situations.

USD $35.68 - USD $64.71 /Hr.
