Role Description

The Engineer is responsible for supporting the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of refrigeration and power systems within a cold storage facility. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of equipment critical to maintaining product integrity and facility operations. The Engineer performs regular inspections, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency response while supporting overall operational reliability in a fast-paced cold storage environment.

Job Type: Full-Time, On-Site

Shift: Wednesday - Saturday | 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Location: Klondike Cold Storage (Surrey, with occasional travel to the Langley location)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of refrigeration systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Perform daily equipment checks and maintain accurate log entries for compressors, temperatures, pressures, and other system parameters.
  • Monitor and maintain temperature vessels, drain excess oil, and grease condenser belts and motors according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform monthly bump tests on ammonia sensors to verify proper operation and calibration.
  • Respond promptly to system alarms and emergency situations including power outages, ammonia leaks, and system shutdowns.
  • Assist with system restart procedures following shutdowns while ensuring compliance with operational and safety standards.
  • Coordinate responses to ammonia, fire, and security alarms, troubleshooting issues and restoring systems efficiently.
  • Ensure refrigeration, electrical, and power systems comply with Technical Safety BC requirements and all applicable safety regulations.
  • Identify, report, and respond to equipment malfunctions or safety hazards that may impact personnel, facility operations, or stored products.
  • Maintain detailed records including maintenance logs, temperature records, compressor logs, and inspection reports.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance programs and support monthly and annual operational reporting.
  • Communicate effectively with the Chief Engineer and Director of Operations regarding maintenance needs, equipment concerns, and operational priorities.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute updates regarding system performance and operational efficiency.
  • Adhere to all WorkSafeBC, food safety, and cold storage safety procedures.
  • Work safely in temperatures ranging from -2°C to -35°C, including exposure to wind chill during freezer operations.
  • Operate effectively in a fast-paced warehouse environment while prioritizing safety, accuracy, and responsiveness.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Certified 4th Class Power Engineer with valid certification, or equivalent industry-recognized qualifications.
  • Experience working with industrial refrigeration systems, preferably within cold storage or food distribution facilities.
  • Strong understanding of refrigeration, power systems, emergency shutdown procedures, and facility safety systems.
  • Familiarity with ammonia refrigeration systems and related safety protocols is considered an asset.
  • Ability to complete routine maintenance, inspections, and detailed operational logbooks accurately.
  • Knowledge of proper PPE usage and commitment to maintaining safe work practices at all times.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to respond calmly during emergencies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks in high-demand situations.
  • Comfortable working in freezer and refrigerated environments ranging from -20°C to -35°C.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 25–30 kg and performing duties involving walking, bending, and standing for extended periods.
