Job Description

The Opportunity

This is a newly created, senior-level role for a seasoned logistics and transportation leader who understands the realities of commodities-based, agriculture-driven supply chains, particularly in Western Canada. As JGL continues to grow across multiple divisions, we are intentionally strengthening the systems, processes, and partnerships that support how agricultural products move from origin to customer, often across large geographies, seasonal cycles, and volatile markets.

This role is not about maintaining the status quo. It is about bringing experienced judgment to complex logistics challenges that are unique to agriculture and commodity markets. This includes the movement of grain, wheat, barley, oats, canola, pulses, and livestock-related products, where volumes fluctuate, timing matters, margins are tight, and weather and market conditions can change quickly.

You will have the opportunity, and the expectation, to step back, assess how we operate today, and help design a more efficient, resilient, and scalable logistics and transportation model for the future. In doing so, you will directly influence cost control, asset utilization, service reliability, and how JGL delivers value to producers and partners across Western Canada and North America.

You will work closely with leaders across Commodities, Livestock, Logistics, Ag Retail, and Finance to ensure our transportation strategies reflect real-world agricultural operations and support JGL’s broader goals and long-term vision.

For the right individual, this is a rare opportunity to build and shape a core function from the ground up within a respected, Saskatchewan-based organization that values practical experience, strong relationships, and long-term thinking.

Across our group of companies, we provide tailored products and services designed to help farming and ranching operations thrive throughout North America. By investing in our people, embracing innovation, and staying rooted in the values that built our business, we are committed to driving growth, resilience, and long-term sustainability in agriculture.

  • Translate data-driven insights into practical, actionable initiatives that improve both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic direction.
  • Establish KPIs and monitoring mechanisms to ensure initiatives remain on track and deliver sustained, measurable results.

Vendor and Asset Optimization

  • Strengthen logistics and transportation vendor relationships by assessing performance, renegotiating terms, and ensuring competitive pricing, service reliability, and overall partnership value.
  • Optimize fleet and logistics assets, including utilization levels, maintenance approaches, replacement planning, and capital deployment decisions.
  • Evaluate opportunities to consolidate suppliers, streamline procurement activities, and enhance transparency across all transportation-related spending.
  • Ensure vendor and asset decisions align with operational requirements and JGL’s long-term financial and strategic goals.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate closely with senior leadership, divisional managers, operations teams, and finance to ensure logistics and transportation initiatives support broader organizational priorities.
  • Provide clear, data-informed recommendations, business cases, and status updates to executive stakeholders to support timely and effective decision-making.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor on operational excellence, asset utilization, logistics strategy, and cost optimization.

  • Evaluate and recommend the long-term structure for a centralized logistics and transportation function within JGL.
  • Develop insights and recommendations regarding the staffing, systems, processes, technology, and governance required to support a modernized and scalable logistics organization.
  • Assess opportunities for integration, standardization, and improved coordination across divisions to strengthen operational consistency and efficiency.
  • Lay the foundation for a forward-looking, high-performing logistics and transportation model that supports JGL’s growth and long-term strategy.

Key Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive senior leadership experience in logistics, transportation, fleet operations, or supply chain management, ideally within commodities-based or agriculture-driven environments.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the operational realities of Western Canadian agriculture, including seasonal volume fluctuations, weather-related impacts, margin sensitivity, and market volatility.
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen, with the ability to evaluate capital investments, optimize asset utilization, manage transportation spend, and drive measurable cost efficiencies.
  • Proven experience assessing and redesigning logistics models to improve scalability, resilience, and operational performance across multiple divisions or business units.
  • Experience managing and negotiating carrier, supplier, and third-party logistics relationships, with a focus on performance standards, accountability, and long-term partnership value.
  • Strategic thinker who can balance practical, on-the-ground realities with forward-looking infrastructure and transportation planning.
  • Track record of leading cross-functional collaboration across operations, finance, commodities, livestock, and retail teams to ensure alignment between logistics strategy and broader business objectives.
  • Experience building, mentoring, and leading high-performing teams within complex, multi-site, or geographically dispersed organizations.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders, build trusted relationships, and provide clear direction in fast-moving environments.
  • Experience in agriculture, grain handling, livestock logistics, bulk commodity transportation, or other asset-intensive industries is strongly preferred.
