Cloud Infrastructure Engineer (Azure)

Insight Global is seeking a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer (Azure) to support a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) that serves as the central hub for a consortium of nine academic institutions. This role supports government‑contracted research and development (R&D) and requires a secure, scalable, and high‑performance Azure cloud platform.

This is a hands‑on cloud infrastructure engineering role with a strong emphasis on Azure, automation, networking fundamentals, and hybrid identity. The engineer will build, automate, troubleshoot, and scale Azure infrastructure in a multi‑tenant, research‑driven environment. The ideal candidate is technically curious, comfortable working below the abstraction layer, and capable of owning systems end‑to‑end with minimal micromanagement.

This role is focused on building and evolving cloud platforms, not maintaining clinical or commercial SaaS applications.

Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities

• Design, build, and support Azure environments segmented by subscriptions, tenants, and lines of business.
• Build and deploy net‑new Azure infrastructure, including virtual machines, storage, networking, and Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments for research teams.
• Respond to infrastructure requests and incidents related to cloud builds, access, networking, and system availability.
• Author, modify, and troubleshoot Terraform configurations, including variables, modules, naming conventions, and state awareness.
• Perform heavy automation and scripting, primarily using PowerShell (Python and Bash are strong pluses).
• Ensure cloud systems are available, patched, monitored, and recoverable.
• Support Azure cost management, budgeting, and optimization across subscriptions.
• Design, support, and troubleshoot Azure networking, including VNets, subnets, routing, DNS, DHCP behavior, and hybrid connectivity.
• Troubleshoot issues across layers: operating system, identity, networking, and cloud services.
• Participate in Agile / Scrum ceremonies and collaborate closely with infrastructure and DevOps stakeholders.
• Assist with expanding CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and DevOps maturity.
• Support new research programs and initiatives requiring custom cloud architectures.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
• 3+ years of hands‑on experience engineering and supporting Azure IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS environments.
• 3+ years of scripting and automation experience using PowerShell (Python, Bash, or Azure CLI preferred).
• 3+ years supporting Azure networking in large‑scale, multi‑tenant, or multi‑site environments.
• Experience designing, deploying, and troubleshooting cloud infrastructure from first principles, not just via managed abstractions.
• Proven ability to independently troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues and explain root cause clearly.

Technical Skills

• Strong understanding of Azure architecture and resource management
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) – ability to author, review, and debug configurations
• Networking fundamentals: DNS, DHCP, routing, gateways, CIDR/subnetting
• Hybrid identity: on‑prem Active Directory, Entra ID (Azure AD), sync and access models
• Automation & scripting (PowerShell required)
• Linux and Windows system administration fundamentals
• Monitoring, patching, availability, and operational hygiene
• Familiarity with Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile workflows
