Career Exploration & Education creates curricular and co-curricular learning experiences at the intersection of career, equity, and wellbeing in partnership with student, recent graduate, tri campus, and employer communities. We design career learning experiences that support students’ self-directed learning related to career exploration, career decision-making, employment and further education preparation. Your Opportunity
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Career Education, the Coordinator, Career Peer Programs will be responsible for the overall coordination of the Career Exploration & Education Career Peer Program and student colleague engagement initiatives across the unit.
Working with other colleagues across the unit, the Coordinator, Career Peer Programs is responsible for coordinating the work of the Peer Career Advisors and Peer Career Facilitators as well as facilitating Career Education advising and workshops. The work of Peer Career roles involves co-facilitating workshops, conducting group and individual consultations, providing information referrals to career resources both within the University of Toronto and beyond, promoting Career Exploration & Education to campus partners, and assisting with the delivery of career events.
The Coordinator, Career Peer Programs will provide onboarding, training, and ongoing support to the Peer Career Advisors and Peer Career Workshop Facilitators, as well as oversee the day to day service delivery and operational needs of the program. Working with other members of Career Exploration & Education, the Coordinator, Career Peer Programs will also be responsible for fostering connection and community among student colleagues within the unit, and developing a shared training curriculum for student staff using a work integrated learning framework.
Education
In collaboration with colleagues across Career Exploration & Education , the Coordinator, Career Peer Program will engage in five key areas of responsibility:
- Develop, manage, and assess the Career Peer Program, establishing a high level of service standard in a peer to peer, learner-centered model, while ensuring a meaningful work integrated learning opportunity for student staff
- Supervise, coach, and mentor student staff members of the Career Peer Program, including coordinating hiring and onboarding, and developing training and ongoing career and professional development experiences for all student colleagues with Career Exploration & Education within a work integrated learning framework
- Collaborate with Career Exploration & Education colleagues to identify programs and initiatives that can be supported by peer education and develop and maintain a plan for the ongoing engagement of student as partners in the design, delivery, and assessment of Career Exploration & Education programs, services and resources.
- Collaborate with Student Life staff, and campus partners to heighten awareness of the Career Peer Program, to leverage and share best practices in peer programming, and ensure members of the Program have accurate and relevant information for student consultations.
- Collaborate with other colleagues in theCareer Education portfolio to facilitate core Career Education workshops and programming, as well conduct one on one appointments with students and recent alumni about career resources, resume, cover letters, job search, career exploration and interview practice.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Coordinating the recruitment process and training of work-study staff. Assigning and checking the work of work-study students
- Conducting detailed analysis on program efficiency and student learning outcomes to inform program planning activities
- Planning and implementing components of curricular and/or co-curricular programs and activities to foster students' individual career development process
- Delivering and supporting the development of career education workshops for undergraduate, professional, and graduate students and recent alumni with an emphasis on active, hope-centered, anti-oppressive, and self-directed career learning
- Facilitating career education workshops online and in person, encouraging peer to peer learning, and active participant engagement
- Providing virtual and in person advising and coaching students on job search, career exploration and decision making
- Assisting students in locating accurate career and job search information; provide suggestions and referrals to programming within and outside of the Career Exploration & Education
- Advising students on how to prepare job applications, cover letter and resume development
Essential Qualifications
- Master’s degree in student development, higher education, adult education, or any equivalent combination of education or experience.
- Minimum three (3) years experience developing and delivering peer-to-peer programs in an educational institution or organization, with demonstrated experience motivating and leading student staff, volunteers, and student interns. Ability to relate to student staff in a supportive and motivating way.
- Minimum three (3) years experience in an experiential or work integrated learning program delivery environment, with an emphasis on program and curriculum development, delivery, assessment,as well as group facilitation and reflection, preferably within an educational setting, or the non-profit sector.
- Demonstrated knowledge of career development, work-integrated learning, student development and other related theories. Ability to research, learn and utilize theoretical approaches and best-practices for career education.
- Demonstrated ability to design and facilitate effective, multi-modal, interactive learning opportunities and environments for students.
- Demonstrated experience with curriculum development processes, including an understanding on learning outcome development and workshop design principles.
- Experience providing 1:1 advising to students regarding all aspects of career exploration, and job-searching; including self-assessment, researching possible careers, gaining career related experience, creating career action plans and preparing for job or grad school applications.
- Demonstrated commitment to principles of equity, inclusion, justice& reconciliation and knowledge and awareness of the life experiences and career needs of Indigenous, Black, racialized, 2SLGBTQ+ students, and students with disabilities.
- Ability to work in a highly diverse University community and to work constructive and cooperatively with a variety of campus partners in order to foster a support an environment of trust, respect and collaboration.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Demonstrated experience building relationships with academic and co-curricular partners, students, and student groups.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent facilitation skills utilizing new technology and creativity.
- Commitment to continuous professional learning and development.
- Strong time management & organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail, with a proactive solutions focus.
- Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint) and well-developed technology skills including locating and evaluating relevant material using the Internet and database searches; comfort with automated computer systems (e.g. blogs, social networking, e-learning, video clips).
