Description

The Temerty Faculty of Medicine invites applications for the Temerty Health Nexus Chair in Innovation and Technology. The successful candidate must currently hold, or have received an offer of, an academic appointment at the University of Toronto, at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The Chair will be held for a fixed five-year term. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026, or another mutually agreed-upon date.

The Temerty Health Innovation & Technology Chair is intended to support the development, translation, and implementation of transformative health technologies, enabling innovations to advance from early-stage research and concept development to practical application and real-world impact.

The Chairholder will play a critical role in accelerating health innovation within the Faculty’s ecosystem by contributing to strategic initiatives, mentoring innovators, and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration across clinical, research, and industry domains. Innovations supported through the Chair should aim to improve patient outcomes, enhance health system efficiency, and address health inequities through scalable and impactful solutions.

Applicants from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds who are widely respected in their field are encouraged to apply. Candidates may be engaged in basic, clinical, translational, or industrial research and must hold a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree in an allied health discipline. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong and sustained record of peer-reviewed publications, success in securing external funding for collaborative or interdisciplinary research initiatives, and excellence in teaching and mentorship. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated record of advancing innovations toward translation and/or commercialization, including transforming research into applied technologies, ventures, or real-world health solutions, as well as experience in cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration. Strong communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and inclusive leadership are considered assets.

The Chairholder Is Expected To

Lead and contribute to initiatives that support the commercialization and translation of health innovations emerging from the Temerty Medicine. This may include technologies and approaches in digital health, diagnostics, medical imaging, artificial intelligence and machine learning, medical devices, novel drug and biological therapies, rapid manufacturing platforms, personalized interventions, etc.,

Serve as a mentor and advisor to health innovators within the Faculty,

Actively participate in the Health Innovation Hub (H2i) and support other entrepreneurship initiatives led by Temerty Medicine’s Commercialization and Partnerships unit,

Contribute to building a robust innovation culture and ecosystem, and

Engage with clinical, academic, and industry partners to promote collaboration.

Responsibilities

The Chairholder will be appointed as a Senior Coordinating Mentor within H2i, Temerty Medicine’s health accelerator. The Chairholder is expected to dedicate a minimum of 20% of their time (0.2 FTE) to H2i-related responsibilities, which include:

Mentoring and providing strategic guidance to ventures supported by H2i,

Supporting the design and delivery of H2i programming and initiatives, and

Serving as a strategic leadership advisor to the Director of Commercialization and Partnerships, supporting H2i planning and priority-setting

This contribution is a core and mandatory expectation of the Chair and must be sustained throughout the term.

The Chair award provides an annual allocation of $170,000 per annum, consisting of $150,000 to support the Chairholder’s salary and $20,000 to support activities directly related to the Chair’s mandate in health innovation and technology. All expenditures must comply with University of Toronto’s policies.

a cover letter of support from the Department Chair confirming support for the appointment, including protected time for the required 20% (0.2FTE) commitment to H2i,

the applicant’s curriculum vitae, and

a 5-page (maximum) statement outlining:

current and future plans for innovation and/or technology advancement,

educational interests related to the Chair’s mandate,

planned engagement with H2i,

an Equity, Diversity, indigeneity, Inclusion, Accessibility (EDIIA) statement, and

names of three academic or industry references.
