Job description

We take play seriously. We’re looking for curious adventurers ready to find their party, fueled by imagination and drive to build what’s never been built before. At Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, you’ll collaborate with passionate teams to reimagine our iconic brands and create experiences that spark joy, connection, and community through the magic of play. This is your chance to shape legendary play that lasts a lifetime.

At Wizards of the Coast, we connect people around the world through play and imagination. From our genre-defining games like Magic: The Gathering® and Dungeons & Dragons® to our growing multiverse, we continue to innovate and build new ways to foster friendship and connection. That’s where you come in!

This Technical Game Editor position draws on your love of games, mastery of language, drive for consistency, and deep knowledge of Magic. Our team of outstanding editors collaborates to ensure that all text elements of Magic card sets and related materials meet our quality standards for gameplay, player experience, Magic rules accuracy, grammar, punctuation, and clarity.
At Wizards, we believe diversity of experience is fundamental to creating accessible and fun gaming experiences for all of our players. We encourage everyone to consider being a part of our team.

What You'll Do:

  • Craft the language of Magic. In partnership with your fellow editors and the Rules Management team, own the presentation and technical implementation of each new Magic card's language. Ensure all cards and mechanics in upcoming releases adhere to the team’s current philosophies, balancing historical precedents with innovation and player understanding.
  • Shape tomorrow’s Magic cards today. Help game designers refine their mechanics and card designs. Regularly playtest upcoming Magic sets, contributing thoughtful and well-reasoned feedback.
  • Support creative text development. Partner with Worldbuilding and Game Design leads to establish the creative and gameplay goals of each card, and ensure card names, flavor words, and flavor text align with and reinforces those goals.
  • Keep a sharp eye on quality. Proofread cards for text errors, layout inconsistencies, and typographical anomalies.

What You'll Bring:

  • 2+ years of professional experience in technical editing, game writing, or comparable work.
  • Mastery of the MTG Comprehensive Rules on par with a Level 1 certified judge in a 3-level judge program, or any judge certification focused on Regular Rules Enforcement level expertise.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Magic historical card catalog, with a focus on card wording.
  • Strong proofreading skills and attention to detail.
  • Deeply collaborative outlook and the confidence and trust to work with others.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and creative, with a constant appetite for knowledge. Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

Nice to Have:

  • Familiarity with Smartsheet, Microsoft Office (esp Word), Adobe Suite (Acrobat, InDesign), and/or Confluence.
  • Experience judging Magic tournaments or events.
  • Bilingual in Japanese a plus!
