Position Title: Elder in Residence Support Worker & Receptionist

Position Type: Full-Time

Reports to: Haisla Community School, Principal

Job Overview

Reporting to the Haisla Community School Principal, the Elders in Residence Support Worker/Receptionist plays a vital role in supporting Haisla language revitalization, cultural preservation, and student wellness within the school community. This position works collaboratively with Elders, Language and Culture Teachers, students, families, and staff to integrate Haisla language, values, traditions, and cultural teachings into daily learning experiences. The role also provides reception and administrative support, ensuring a welcoming, professional, and culturally respectful environment for students, families, staff, and visitors. Approximately 50% of the position is dedicated to cultural programming and support, and 50% to reception and administrative duties; This allocation is intended as a general guideline and may be adjusted based on school operational needs. The principal, or delegate, will determine priorities when responsibilities conflict.

Duties & Responsibilities

Cultural Support:

  • Support the integration of Haisla language, culture, traditions, and values throughout the school community.
  • Collaborate with Elders, Language and Culture Teachers, and school staff to plan and deliver cultural learning opportunities and activities.
  • Support Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Language & Culture Teachers in delivering cultural teachings, storytelling, traditional knowledge sharing, land-based learning, and language revitalization initiatives.
  • Provide cultural guidance, mentorship, and support to students, staff, and families while promoting Haisla cultural protocols and practices.
  • Assist teachers in incorporating Haisla perspectives, traditional knowledge, and cultural content into classroom learning and school programs.
  • Coordinate and support cultural events, ceremonies, gatherings, field trips, parent engagement activities, and community-based learning experiences.
  • Foster positive relationships among students, families, Elders, staff, and community members to strengthen cultural identity, belonging, and student success.

Receptionist/Administrative Support:

  • Serve as the school's primary receptionist by welcoming visitors, answering and directing calls, responding to inquiries, and maintaining front office operations.
  • Perform administrative duties including scheduling, attendance tracking, filing, data entry, correspondence preparation, record keeping, and supporting school communications.
  • Maintain a professional, welcoming, confidential, and culturally respectful environment for all students, families, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintain office supply inventory, including ordering and tracking supplies, where applicable.
  • Provide additional school support services, including library assistance, recess supervision, emergency procedures/drills, special event support, and other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development opportunities, and school initiatives that support the mission and goals of Haisla Community School.

Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A combination of relevant education and/or experience may also be deemed acceptable.
  • Strong connection to indigenous culture, values, and community.
  • Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on data-driven decision-making.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and various databases, search engines and Outlook/email.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to professionally connect with and influence a diverse group of individuals.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening).
