Job description
Who we are:
Who you are:
We are always looking for amazing talent who can contribute to our growth and deliver results! Geotab is seeking a Lead Embedded Developer who will drive the technical direction of the Software in the Loop (SiL) team and evolve the simulation framework that validates GO device firmware at scale. In this role, you will architect solutions, mentor developers, and ensure that Geotab's embedded systems testing infrastructure keeps pace with a rapidly growing product portfolio. If you love embedded systems, simulation technology, and technical leadership — and are keen to join an industry leader — we would love to hear from you!
What you'll do:
As a Lead Embedded Developer, your key area of responsibility will be owning technical initiatives and defining the architecture for the Software in the Loop simulation platform a proprietary Golang-based framework that simulates Geotab GO devices both locally for individual developers and at cloud scale for overnight regression runs across hundreds of virtual vehicles. You will make architectural decisions, drive GitLab CI/CD pipeline management, lead sprint planning in collaboration with your hiring manager, and spearhead upcoming initiatives including hardware-in-the-loop integration and virtual-twin tooling for Engineering Support teams. You will mentor team members, uphold technical best practices, perform peer code reviews, and maintain design documentation to ensure long-term code quality and reuse.
You will work closely with your hiring manager and an architect to co-define focus areas each two-week Scrum cycle, and engage cross-functionally with the Vehicle Systems Engineering group in Waterloo for data inputs, the Engineering Support team as a key consumer of the simulation tooling, and the cloud infrastructure team that supports the platform's cloud layer. To be successful in this role you will be a technically credible communicator who can translate complex embedded systems and architectural decisions clearly for both engineers and non-technical stakeholders. In addition, the successful candidate will bring intellectual curiosity, strong ownership instincts, and the ability to understand adjacent domains beyond their own direct technical focus.
How you'll make an impact:
-
Architect and validate firmware simulation solutions from requirements through to production, owning technical initiatives end-to-end.Lead technical projects across the team's roadmap, including hardware-in-the-loop integration and Engineering Support virtual-twin tooling.
-
Provide advanced technical mentorship and take ownership of the quality and deliverables of developers within the team.
-
Perform quality assurance through peer review, ensuring test coverage, enforcing coding standards, identifying potential bugs, and aligning implementations with requirements.
-
Identify key areas of architecture improvement and contribute to the team roadmap, breaking large engineering efforts into parallel-executable pieces.
-
Define and maintain unit test, integration test, and simulated test frameworks to facilitate test-driven development across the embedded platform.
-
Advise stakeholders and management with data-driven insights and recommendations to improve team direction and execution quality.
-
Contribute to defining strategic direction, planning the roadmap, and synthesizing cross-team feedback to ensure team success.
What you'll bring to the role:
-
Post-secondary Diploma or Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
-
7+ years of hands-on embedded software development experience, with demonstrated progression to a technical lead or architect level.
-
Proficiency in Golang; experience with C/POSIX, embedded Linux, and/or RTOS environments.
- Experience in developing containerized, microservices environments geared towards scalable cloud deployments.
-
Proven experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab preferred), scripting languages (Python, Bash), and SQL or BigQuery for device health and data analysis.
-
Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and design patterns common to resource-constrained embedded systems, including multi-threaded and RTOS environments.
-
Experience in software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, or large-scale automated test infrastructure is a strong asset.
-
Must be able to support a hybrid schedule.
