Junior Biologist / Environmental Technician (Seasonal)
Are you a Junior Biologist or Environmental Technician Junior Biologist or Environmental Technician to join our growing team. We are open to filling this position in our St. John’s, Newfoundland office.
GEMTEC is seeking a Junior Biologist or Environmental Technician to support temporary ecological fieldwork for a client in central Newfoundland. This position is ideal for someone early in their career who is passionate about wildlife, enjoys working outdoors, and thrives in remote field environments. Candidates do not need to live in St. John’s.
This role offers the opportunity to gain meaningful field experience, work alongside experienced environmental professionals, and contribute to important ecological projects in Newfoundland’s unique landscapes.

You’re an ideal candidate if you:
- Are familiar with identifying bird species found in Newfoundland habitats
- Are comfortable living and working in a remote camp environment.
- Are willing to travel by helicopter and work in rugged outdoor conditions.
- Have strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Have the ability to follow directions and practice stringent safety protocols.
- Are capable of working both independently and as part of a field team.
A typical day on the job might look like:
- Conduct field surveys with a focus on avian species common to Newfoundland habitats.
- Accurately identify bird species by sight and sound.
- Maintain detailed field notes, data records, and daily logs.
- Follow strict safety procedures and environmental protocols at all times.
- Work collaboratively with field teams while also being capable of completing tasks independently.
- Participate in helicopter-supported travel and camp-based field operations.
- Adapt to schedule changes and varying field conditions as required.
- Adhering to all company policies.
- Other duties as required.
Your background and what you bring:
- Degree or diploma in Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Familiarity with birds and the ability to identify species commonly found in Newfoundland ecosystems.
- Previous experience in environmental fieldwork.
- Experience working in remote areas or industrial/mining settings.
- Valid wilderness first aid or safety-related certifications.
- ATV training would be considered an asset.
- Valid driver’s license and have access to a personal vehicle for work related travel
Work Schedule:
- Work will be based out of a mining area in central Newfoundland.
- Rotation will typically follow a 4 day weekly schedule, with travel to and from site included.
- Flexibility for adjustments to the schedule is essential based on weather, client needs, and field conditions.
