Job Description
About the Role
We are looking for a strong Shopify backend specialist to complement our excellent frontend development team. While our frontend is already in great shape, we need someone who brings deep backend expertise, strong organisational skills, and a sharp eye for architecture, code quality, file structure, and overall site performance.
This is not a typical “build themes and Liquid templates” role. You will own the backend architecture, optimise performance, clean up technical debt, and implement scalable solutions that make the entire Shopify store faster, more maintainable, and ready for growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Backend Architecture & Organization:
- Lead the restructuring and organisation of the Shopify codebase, apps, and custom solutions. Identify and fix deficiencies in file structure, naming conventions, and overall project organisation.
- Performance Optimisation:
- Deeply analyse and improve site performance (Core Web Vitals, page speed, server response times, etc.). Implement caching strategies, optimise Liquid code, database queries, and third-party app impact.
- Custom Development & Integrations:
- Build and maintain robust backend solutions using Shopify APIs (REST & GraphQL), webhooks, Shopify Functions, and custom apps. Integrate with external systems (ERP, CRM, warehousing, marketing tools, etc.).
- Technical Debt Reduction:
- Audit existing code, identify inefficiencies, and refactor for long-term maintainability and scalability.
- Outbound Motion & Automation:
- Design and implement outbound customer flows, including abandoned cart recovery, post-purchase sequences, win-back campaigns, review requests, and other automated marketing/sales motions. Build or optimise Klaviyo, Omnisend, or similar platforms' integrations with custom backend logic where needed.
- App & Theme Management:
- Evaluate, select, and customise Shopify apps. When necessary, build custom private apps instead of relying on bloated third-party solutions.
- Testing, Debugging & Monitoring:
- Ensure high code quality, implement proper error handling, logging, and monitoring of store health and performance.
Requirements
- Strong Shopify Expertise (minimum 3–5 years hands-on experience)
- Deep knowledge of Shopify Liquid, APIs (REST + GraphQL), webhooks, Checkout Extensibility, and Shopify Functions
- Proven experience with custom app development (Node.js / Ruby / Python preferred)
- Strong understanding of ecommerce performance optimization and debugging tools (Lighthouse, Shopify Analytics, browser dev tools, etc.)
- Experience organizing and refactoring large, messy Shopify codebases
- Solid experience with outbound automation platforms (Klaviyo, Omnisend, Attentive, etc.) and building custom logic around them
- Ability to write clean, well-documented, and scalable code
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with Shopify Hydrogen / Oxygen (headless)
- Knowledge of backend languages (Node.js, Ruby on Rails)
- Experience with large-scale Shopify stores or high-traffic environments
- Familiarity with CI/CD, Git workflows, and modern development practices
- Understanding of SEO, accessibility, and conversion rate optimization
What We Offer
- Opportunity to own the backend and technical architecture end-to-end
- Work alongside a strong frontend team
- Significant impact on store performance and revenue through optimization and automation
- Competitive compensation and growth opportunities
