Job Description
Design the statistical foundations of research that informs national policy and earns public trust.
As a senior survey research statistician at Gallup, you will serve as a methodological leader and trusted architect of survey research for Gallup’s most demanding U.S. clients, including federal government agencies, large national nonprofits, and leading academic and research institutions.
These engagements require the highest standards of rigor, transparency and credibility, and your expertise will directly shape the design systems and quality frameworks that deliver on that promise.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the design and execution of complex survey research programs, including probability-based and address-based sampling, push-to-web and multimode data collection strategies, probability panel operations (both cross-sectional and longitudinal), and advanced weighting and calibration methodologies for probability and nonprobability samples.
- Apply Bayesian approaches and small area estimation techniques to address sub-national and hard-to-reach population inference challenges.
- Own the statistical design process end-to-end: crafting sampling plans in compliance with OMB standards and federal statistical agency norms, developing survey-specific variance estimation and imputation of missing data methods, implementing data confidentiality/disclosure procedures, producing audit-ready technical documentation, and communicating methods and findings with authority to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Mentor analysts and junior statisticians, contribute to Gallup’s internal methodological standards, and play a visible role in quality assurance across research programs as a senior member of the team.
- Contribute across Gallup’s broad range of analytical methods, from traditional statistical approaches including regression, analysis of variance and generalized linear models to modern machine learning techniques.
Who We Want
- Technically skilled and experienced statisticians with deep expertise in modern survey design — statisticians who command the full spectrum, from sampling theory to Bayesian inference, and can navigate complex, multi-stakeholder research environments
- Strategic problem-solvers with a track record of peer-reviewed scholarship, federal and large-scale applied research, and a reputation for advancing the rigor of the field
- Self-motivated collaborators who translate sophisticated methodology into accessible language for federal program officers, nonprofit leaders and academic partners, and who produce documentation that withstands scrutiny
- Dedicated achievers who elevate the work of those around them, build institutional knowledge, and hold themselves and their teams to the highest standards of transparency and integrity
What You Need
Required
- Ph.D. in statistics, survey methodology, biostatistics or a closely related quantitative field
- At least 12 years of applied survey research or quantitative research experience, including experience with federal and/or state government survey programs
- Expert-level proficiency in R and/or Python
- Knowledge of AAPOR standards on calculation and interpretation of survey response rates
- Knowledge of imputation of missing data techniques, including multiple imputation
- Experience designing and implementing Non-Response Bias studies in accordance with OMB guidelines
- Familiarity with use of machine learning techniques in survey methodology
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to proposal writing in response to Request for Proposals (RFPs)
- Demonstrated ability to produce audit-ready technical documentation and communicate complex methods to non-technical stakeholders
- A commitment to working on-site at Gallup’s Washington, D.C., office at least three days per week required
- Eligibility to work in the United States required; this position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship
Strongly Preferred
- Working knowledge of SAS desirable
- Demonstrated expertise in the following areas: address-based sampling (ABS) design, push-to-web and multimode survey methodology, probability and nonprobability sample calibration and weighting, Bayesian methods and small area estimation; familiarity with other areas also strongly preferred
- Experience designing and operating probability-based panels (cross-sectional and/or longitudinal)
- Knowledge of OMB standards and federal statistical agency norms and reporting requirements
- Peer-reviewed publications in survey methodology or a related applied field
- Experience mentoring junior statisticians and analysts
