Job Description

This position performs journey-level, highly skilled, maintenance, repair and installation of industrial and commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning equipment, and control systems such as chillers, air conditioners, heat-pumps, oil and gas fired boilers, oil and gas furnaces, cooling towers, pumps, air handlers, exhaust air units, make up air units, duct air conveyance systems, variable air volume systems, variable volume temperature systems, multi-zone units, electrical power and control circuits, time clocks, gas piping, fuel oil supply piping, fossil fuel burning device, flu gas systems, condensate pump and drain lines, fan coil units, condensing units, unit heaters, radiant and fan forced heaters, hydronic heating and cooling systems, and complex computer operated direct digital control (DDC), and complex pneumatic control systems. Determines HVAC systems proper operation, trouble shoots malfunctions, calibrates and repairs equipment. Carries out the designated procedures for seasonal start-ups and shut downs of all related equipment. Maintains detailed records of inspections, repairs, parts usage, and system performance; orders parts as needed and uses a procurement card in accordance with policy. This position works under general direction of the chief building engineer and/or facilities manager.

- This position can be assigned anywhere in the county daily.
- The position location and work schedule can be altered or changed at any given time due to business necessity and operational needs.
- A flexible working schedule is required as well as call-back and on-call participation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to:
High school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education plus a two-year technical degree in air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, and ventilation plus two years of progressively responsible air conditioning or HVAC experience or completion of an apprentice-level vocational training program in air conditioning for a total of four years of progressively responsible air conditioning or HVAC experience.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Valid driver's license
- Universal refrigerant recovery license;
- Possession of a valid journeyman license from the state of Virginia within twelve months of date of appointment to the position.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Current possession of valid Journeyman’s HVAC License from Virginia (or ability to obtain within 12 months) or Commercial HVAC manufacturer-specific training/certifications
- 2+ years of HVAC field service experience
- Experience or working knowledge of Direct Digital Control (DDC) and Pneumatic Controls Systems, Energy Management Systems (EMS), Building Automation Systems (BAS), such as Trane Tracer and other related HVAC Controls
- NATE (North American Technician Excellence) and/or HVAC Excellence Certifications
- Working knowledge of local, state, national mechanical, electrical and building codes applicable to commercial HVAC Systems
- OSHA 10/30 or other safety training certifications relevant to electrical/mechanical environments.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to climb extension ladder and scaffolds up to 50ft. Must be able to climb step ladders up to 16ft. in height Must be able to stoop, bend, and work in tiring/uncomfortable conditions for extended periods of time. Must bel able to lift up and carry up to 75 lbs. with assistance of dolly, lift or staff. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
