Job Description
About Exchanger Industries
Exchanger Industries Limited (EIL) is a Canadian leader in the design and manufacture of custom shell-and-tube heat exchangers and pressure vessels, serving the oil and gas, petrochemical, refining, and industrial markets worldwide. Our reputation is built on engineering excellence, meticulous fabrication, and an unwavering commitment to quality and safety.
We are hiring a QC Receiving Inspector on an 18-month contract to cover a maternity leave. This is an afternoon shift role, Monday to Friday, 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, based at our Calgary facility.
The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the QC Lead Inspector, the QC Receiving Inspector plays a critical gatekeeping role on our shop floor, ensuring that every piece of material entering our facility conforms to the engineering drawings, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), applicable codes, and customer specifications before it is released for fabrication.
This is a hands-on technical role for someone who takes pride in accuracy, traceability, and documentation discipline. You will verify Material Test Reports (MTRs), perform receiving inspections, manage material traceability, and collaborate closely with Receiving, Document Control, Engineering, and fellow QC Inspectors to keep our production pipeline moving with zero tolerance for non-conforming material.
Shift & Schedule
This is an afternoon shift position. The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday, 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, for the full 18-month contract term. Please only apply if you are available and willing to commit to this schedule.
Key Responsibilities
Material Test Report (MTR) Review
- Verify that incoming material meets the physical and chemical requirements of the applicable edition of ASME Code Section II, drawings, ITPs, and client material specifications.
- Apply the EIL material-checked stamp to each approved MTR, then sign, date, and where applicable record minimum thickness; add qualifying plate material to the list of acceptable plate materials.
- Scan approved MTRs into the applicable job files and respond to internal inquiries regarding material heat numbers.
Receiving Inspection & Material Control
- Perform material receiving inspections to confirm that supplied parts match the current drawing for material grade, dimensions, quantities, and overall conformance.
- Inspect and test pressure vessel and structural components for visible weld defects, correct material and grade, correct dimensions, and conformance with construction drawings and work-order specifications.
- Ensure all materials used in fabrication of pressure vessels and pressure piping are properly identified, marked, and consistent with the bill of materials listed on the drawing.
- When stock pipe material is used, ensure heat numbers are transferred (painted or stamped) before cutting, so both pieces remain fully identified throughout fabrication.
- When stock plate is used, verify materials meet physical and chemical requirements of the applicable Code of Construction; ensure plate used for pressure-retaining parts is traceable to the original code-required markings (heat number and plate identifier) before applying the EIL material-check stamp.
- Release approved materials to the shop and update the materials database to reflect ready-for-use status.
Non-Conformance & Testing
- Identify and immediately remove non-conforming material from use; document and escalate in accordance with EIL's Quality Management System.
- Perform and interpret tests and test results in accordance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and procedures.
- Recommend, where appropriate, that analytical NDE methods (magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, or ultrasonic inspection) be applied to supplement visual inspection.
Collaboration & Documentation
- Work alongside fellow QC Inspectors to confirm all material documentation is accurate and complete prior to forwarding to Document Control.
- Support the Receiving function as required across day-to-day operations.
- Maintain clear, auditable records in accordance with EIL's Quality Management System.
What You Bring
Education & Experience
- Graduate of an Institute of Technology program (welding engineering technology, welding design, or metallurgy preferred).
- 1 to 3+ years of experience performing inspection on pressure vessels, ideally within heavy manufacturing, welding, or machining environments.
- Previous welding experience or a Journeyman / B-Ticket welder background is a strong asset.
Technical Knowledge
- Demonstrated understanding and application of Canadian Welding Standards CSA B51, CSA W47.1 and W59, and ASME B31.3, Sections I, II, V, VIII, and IX, as well as TEMA, ANSI, API-660, and API-661.
- Basic working knowledge of NDE inspection methods and their appropriate application.
- Adequate documented training to substantiate inspection qualifications.
Personal Attributes
- Exceptional attention to detail; this role has zero room for oversights on traceability or conformance.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills; able to prioritize competing demands in a busy receiving environment.
- Proactive, confident communicator, comfortable working with Receiving, Engineering, Document Control, and shop-floor personnel.
- Ability to make sound, confident decisions on material acceptance and non-conformance.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, climb and descend stairs, and bend throughout the shift.
- Work is performed within a heavy industrial welding and machining environment; appropriate PPE is required at all times.
- Travel requirements are very limited.
Why This Role, Why EIL

- Predictable schedule — a consistent Monday-to-Friday afternoon shift with no weekend rotations built into the role.
- Quality-first culture — work inside a mature Quality Management System on code-regulated equipment, with direct mentorship from our QC Lead Inspector and alongside a collaborative QC Inspection team.
