Job Description
Head of Creative: Define the Next Chapter for Dotted Line Agency
Richmond, VA | Hybrid
We’re looking for a leader to raise the standard of what's possible. Dotted Line Agency is at an inflection point. We’ve built a strong foundation across strategy, creative, and media. Now we’re looking for a leader to help us move from strong execution to defining platforms—and from regional recognition to national relevance.
Most agencies still separate: brand and performance, creative and media, storytelling and results. We don’t.
We believe creativity is the most powerful growth lever a brand has when it’s built inside a system that actually performs. This means ideas are informed by data, not diluted by it, and creative is accountable to outcomes, not just output.
This role is central to our ambition to become one of the most respected, effective, and creatively distinct agencies. This is a chance to build, not inherit—shape the creative direction of a scaling agency and define what modern creative leadership looks like in an AI-influenced world.
The Role: Builder, Maker, Vision Setter
As Dotted Line’s Head of Creative, you are responsible for the agency’s creative standard—in the work and in the team. This is a hands-on leadership role. You are responsible for both the quality of the work and the system that produces it.
You will actively shape ideas while building the systems, culture, and discipline that allow creative excellence to scale.
- Elevate the Work: Set and uphold the creative bar. Push ideas beyond expected solutions into platform-level thinking, ensuring every idea is strategically grounded, built to solve real business problems, and increases the likelihood our clients are chosen.
- Be in the Work: Concept, write, and refine ideas alongside the team. You will model the creative standard you expect, leading briefs, brainstorms, and creative reviews.
- Integrate for Outcomes: Partner across strategy, media, and data to champion integrated thinking and build ideas that perform. Bring AI and emerging discovery behaviors into the creative process.
- Build the Team: Mentor, challenge, and develop creative talent at all levels while building a high-performing team with clear expectations, accountability, and a shared standard for excellence.
- Drive Agency Growth: Take ownership in driving agency growth through creative leadership—helping win new business, expand existing relationships, and selling bold ideas with confidence and business clarity.
The Builder We Need (About You)
You are not just a reviewer of work; you are a builder of ideas, teams, and standards. You think in platforms, not campaigns, and you see the gap between what a client asks for and what they actually need. You bring clarity, calm, and conviction into the room, and can sell unforgettable work to skeptical rooms without ego. You are as comfortable in the work as you are leading it. And, you uncover hidden potential in the work and the team. Then, multiply it.
What Success Looks Like
- The work is consistently distinctive, not safe or expected
- Creative helps win and expand meaningful client relationships
- The team brings thinking, not just execution
- Creative and media operate as one integrated growth engine
Requirements
- 15+ years of agency or integrated creative leadership experience.
- A portfolio that demonstrates strong conceptual thinking—not just executional polish.
- Experience building and selling integrated campaigns and brand platforms that drove measurable results.
- Proven ability to mentor and elevate creative teams.
- Strong presence in client and executive settings, comfortable presenting to CEOs, founders, and executive teams.
The Fundamentals
- Location: Hybrid work environment (Richmond, VA).
- Compensation: Competitive compensation plus performance-based, profit-sharing opportunities.
- Time Off: Unlimited paid time off with 4 weeks minimum, and 14 paid company holidays (including the week between Christmas and New Year’s).
- Benefits: Health, Dental, and Vision; SIMPLE IRA Retirement Plan.
If you’re looking to maintain what you’ve already done, this isn’t the role. If you’re looking to build something that pushes your own standard—and ours—higher, we should talk.
