The History of Costco

The company's first location, opened in 1976 under the Price Club name, was in a converted airplane hangar on Morena Boulevard in San Diego. Originally serving only small businesses, the company found it could achieve far greater buying clout by also serving a selected audience of non-business members. With that change, the growth of the warehouse club industry was off and running. In 1983, the first Costco warehouse location was opened in Seattle. Costco became the first company ever to grow from zero to $3 billion in sales in less than six years. When Costco and Price Club merged in 1993, the combined company, operating under the name PriceCostco, had 206 locations generating $16 billion in annual sales.

The cornerstone of our operating philosophy is simple: reduce costs and convey the savings to our members. Through our vast membership base and tremendous purchasing power, as well as our relentless pursuit of efficiency, we are able to offer the best possible prices to our members. Since embracing the Costco name again in 1997, the company has experienced global growth, with total sales in recent fiscal years surpassing $192 billion.

The retail world underwent a transformation with the emergence of Costco. Entrepreneur Sol Price launched an innovative retail concept in San Diego, California. Price Club set the precedent as the world's initial membership warehouse club, offering members access to unparalleled savings through efficient buying and operational practices.

In its nascent phase, Price Club was solely accessible to business patrons, offering them a vast assortment of goods and wholesale items to choose from. Leading the charge in merchandising, distribution, and marketing was Jim Sinegal, the executive vice president, whose contributions were pivotal in refining the product mix and marketing techniques, ultimately propelling Price Club to become a major player in the retail industry.

Seven years down the line, Jim Sinegal leveraged his know-how to co-create Costco Wholesale with Jeff Brotman, leading to the establishment of the first warehouse in Seattle, Washington in 1983.

In the ensuing decade, both Price Club and Costco Wholesale pressed on with their innovative approaches and expansion strategies, resulting in a merger in 1993 that ushered in a proficient leadership team, propelling Costco to the position of the world's leading warehouse club. As the company moves forward, it remains committed to the principles that attracted and retained millions of loyal members globally. Costco's steadfast devotion to quality is exemplified by its inventory of about 4,000 SKUs, a marked difference from the typical 30,000 SKUs seen in regular supermarkets. By carefully selecting products based on quality, price, brand, and features, the company ensures that it provides the best possible value to its members.
