About the role
We are seeking an experienced Commercial Transport Fleet Manager to oversee the mechanical integrity, regulatory compliance and operational readiness of our growing fleet. This role is critical to ensuring safe, efficient and compliant operations across a diverse asset base. You will lead the coordination between drivers, dispatch and our in-house Heavy Duty Mechanical Shop, ensuring all equipment is properly maintained, compliant and optimized for performance.
Some flexibility for emergency after hours calls may occur.
Fleet Overview:
- approximately 75 Power Units (Day Cabs & Sleeper Tractors)
- 5 & 10 Ton Box Trucks
- approximately 150 trainers including dry vans, heated units, reefers/multi temp and rail gate trailers
Key Responsibilities for Fleet Maintanance and Mechanical Oversight:
- Oversee daily fleet operations of the in-house heavy duty repair shop
- Manage preventative maintenance schedules and repair workflows
- Ensure timely diagnosis and repair of mechanical issues
- Track and optimize maintenance costs, downtime and asset lifecycle
- Coordinate with vendors and suppliers for parts and external repairs
Compliance and Regulatory Management:
- Ensure full compliance with provincial and federal regulations (NSC, CVSE, DOT as applicable)
- Oversee CVSIP inspections, licensing and audit readiness
- Maintain accurate records for all fleet assets (maintenance, inspections, repairs)
- Monitor and enforce driver compliance (logbooks, ELD's, pre-post trip inspections)
Fleet Operations Support:
- Partner with dispatch and operations teams to maximize fleet uptime
- Support equipment allocation and utilization planning
- Implement and maintain fleet management systems and reporting tools
- Analyze data to improve efficiency, safety and cost control
Leadership and Team Management:
- Provide leadership to mechanics, technicians, driver trainer and yard personnel
- Assist mechanics with their credentials and applicable training opportunities
- Work closely with the Driver Trainer to ensure a smooth training program is executed across the fleet through leadership and mentoring
- Establish clear priorities, workflows and performance expectations
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement
- Support hiring, training and development of shop and fleet personnel
Qualifications
- 5+ years of proven experience in commercial fleet management or heavy duty maintenance
- Strong understanding of Class 8 trucks and trailer systems
- Knowledge of transport compliance regulations (NSC, CVSE, ELD, hours of service)
- Experience managing or working closely with a heavy duty repair shop
- Proven ability to manage large, diverse fleets (multi equipment types referred)
- Strong organizational, leadership and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with fleet management software and maintenance tracking systems
Preferred Assets:
- Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic certification or equivalent experience
- Experience with refridgerated and specialized trailer equipment
- Background in high-volumn, multi-lane transportation operations
- Support hiring, training and development of shop and fleet personnel
