Job Purpose
The selected candidate will be responsible for originating and producing impactful stories across digital and broadcast platforms. The role includes researching, scripting, reporting, and presenting content, while generating original story ideas and delivering high-quality journalism.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Propose, research, write, and report well-explained news reports and analytical pieces for publication, while meeting high journalistic standards and fully adhering to BBC Editorial Guidelines.
- Alert editors to breaking news developments and be prepared to file accurate, on-the-spot reports, including live reporting and presentation, as quickly as possible. Advise editors when coverage may not be appropriate.
- Identify issues for regular ground reporting, with a strong focus on video-led storytelling.
- Conduct exclusive interviews on a wide range of subjects, including current affairs, political developments, and social issues, with a strong emphasis on text and video journalism.
- Contribute strong story plans, ground reports, and series ideas during weekly editorial meetings, while consistently generating realistic and impactful coverage ideas.
- Work collaboratively with reporters, producers, and other editorial teams across regions and platforms.
- Deliver spotlight stories regularly for BBC Tamil and, where relevant, the wider BBC audience.
- Provide regular editorial input on news developments, agency reports, newspaper coverage, and government policy briefings.
- Deliver timely, specialist, and confident news coverage and analysis on issues relevant to target audiences.
- Maintain regular and clear communication with editors, ensuring teams are informed about movements, assignments, and contact details throughout reporting assignment
- Deliver content to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial and professional standards

Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in reporting and journalism.
- Strong understanding of digital journalism and multimedia reporting.
- Strong language proficiency in Tamil with ability to write and speak.
- Working knowledge in English.
- Strong knowledge of Tamil Nadu Politics and social issues with understanding of national issues
- Ability to handle live broadcasting, including breaking news coverage, and communicate effectively with target audiences.
- Knowledge of and aptitude for using multimedia production tools and technologies.
- Demonstrates balanced, impartial judgement and the ability to make sound editorial decisions while considering differing perspectives.
- Proven experience in generating original stories and maximising content for digital platforms.
- Ability to work collaboratively with reporters, producers, and cross-functional teams.
- Strong ability to develop and communicate story ideas and contribute meaningfully to editorial planning processes.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt style and approach depending on the audience and editorial context.
- Ability to work flexibly and maintain high performance under pressure, tight deadlines, and changing priorities.
- Understanding of health and safety procedures relevant to broadcasting and field reporting.
