The Opportunity:

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting for a Public Relations Assistant to fill a permanent full-time position. Reporting directly to the Corporate Marketing Supervisor, the Public Relations Assistant works closely with the Community and Public Relations team to support in the implementation and execution of community and public relations activities, campaigns, initiatives, and projects. This position will execute tactical plans and strategies with a focus on events, communications, marketing, public participation, and administrative support. This position will be assigned specific projects as they arise.

Top Key Responsibilities:

  • Administrative Support - Coordinate and prepare for public meetings, events, workshops, training sessions, and community/public relations activities. Support the Senior administrative Assistant with departmental administrative tasks and project execution. Provide general administrative support including memo/letter writing, agenda and minute preparation, proofreading and editing materials, scheduling meetings, liaising with printers/distributors, and maintaining lists, formats, and filing systems. Perform reception duties in person, by phone, and via email. Respond to routine citizen and corporate inquiries. Monitor and respond to departmental email inboxes.
  • Customer Service Collaboration - Work with customer service representatives across the organization to ensure consistent messaging and support where public relations can enhance customer service. Participate virtually with customer service teams to relay information between customer service and communications/marketing consultants.
  • Communications & Marketing Support - Review and edit marketing and communications materials for quality and accuracy. Manage advertising schedules and media buys. Prepare media kits and collateral for public relations events and activities.
  • Web Services & Digital Content Support - Assist in reviewing and updating website and intranet content to support customer service needs. Research, write, and edit web and intranet content. Post and approve live website content under supervision.
  • Corporate Brand Compliance - Share and promote understanding of corporate identity and brand standards across the organization. Review communications and marketing materials for brand compliance.
  • Special Event Support Assist the Corporate Events Specialist with corporate events, trade shows, and meetings. Coordinate procurement and logistical support for special events. Act as a point of connection for departments and divisions with special event needs.

As our preferred candidate, you will have:

  • Two years or equivalent of communications/public relations, business or administrative diploma with related work experience.
  • Ability to work independently using initiative to complete projects and prioritize duties and workload efficiently in a multi-tasking environment. Adept at successfully working in both team and independent situations.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences using a variety of communication methods.
  • Ability to develop trust and credibility when working with a variety of stakeholders at different levels within the organization.
  • Advanced proficiency of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Working knowledge of Web software, ideally Content Management Server, Photoshop and InDesign considered an asset.
  • A solid working knowledge of graphic design principles and software. Must have practical desktop publishing experience.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality when working with confidential material and subject matter.

Status: Regular Full-time

Remuneration: $34.53 to $36.35 per hour

Hours of Work:

75 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday, evenings and weekends may be required when needed.
