The City of Hyattsville is seeking a skilled Mechanic II to join our Department of Public Works (DPW). In this mid-level role, you’ll perform both routine and advanced maintenance on a diverse fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment that directly support essential city services.
This is a hands-on, independent position ideal for an experienced technician who takes pride in solving complex mechanical issues and keeping equipment operating at its best.
What You’ll Do
- Perform routine maintenance (oil changes, brakes, tires, inspections)
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues
- Complete engine, transmission, and major system repairs
- Conduct preventative maintenance and detailed inspections
- Maintain accurate service records using a computerized system (Dossier)
- Operate lifts and shop equipment safely
- Support emergency response operations, including severe weather events
- Mentor and provide guidance to Mechanic I staff
What You’ll Work On
- Heavy-duty trucks
- Municipal vehicles (refuse trucks, public works equipment)
- Hydraulic and electrical systems
- Specialized DPW equipment
What You Bring
- 5+ years of experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
- Experience with heavy-duty or municipal equipment preferred
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Solid understanding of safety standards and repair procedures
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license with clean record
- Ability to obtain a CDL within 12 months
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a shop environment
