The City of Hyattsville is seeking a skilled Mechanic II to join our Department of Public Works (DPW). In this mid-level role, you’ll perform both routine and advanced maintenance on a diverse fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment that directly support essential city services.

This is a hands-on, independent position ideal for an experienced technician who takes pride in solving complex mechanical issues and keeping equipment operating at its best.

What You’ll Do

• Perform routine maintenance (oil changes, brakes, tires, inspections)
• Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues
• Complete engine, transmission, and major system repairs
• Conduct preventative maintenance and detailed inspections
• Maintain accurate service records using a computerized system (Dossier)
• Operate lifts and shop equipment safely
• Support emergency response operations, including severe weather events
• Mentor and provide guidance to Mechanic I staff

What You’ll Work On

• Heavy-duty trucks
• Municipal vehicles (refuse trucks, public works equipment)
• Hydraulic and electrical systems
• Specialized DPW equipment

What You Bring

• 5+ years of experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
• Experience with heavy-duty or municipal equipment preferred
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Solid understanding of safety standards and repair procedures

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver’s license with clean record
• Ability to obtain a CDL within 12 months
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a shop environment
