About The Farm
Burkett Farm is a four-acre agricultural center located in Cary, North Carolina. We produce food and cut flowers for donation, and model and teach ideas that support a regenerative food culture.
Job Description
The right candidate will have a strong interest in both vegetable/fruit production and cut flowers (which we spend significant time on from early spring though late summer). The best fit will have a curious mind, great work ethic and be dedicated to our mission. We need someone who is reliable, pays close attention to detail and would enjoy working with volunteers.
This person will carry out a wide variety of tasks. Work will include:
- Prepping beds and planting transplants or direct seeding
- Weeding
- Harvesting, washing, and packing produce
- Caring for two flocks of laying hens
- Treating plants for pests and disease
- Maintaining and organizing farm tools and machinery
- Managing and repairing drip irrigation systems
- Safely operating machinery such as a tractor, tiller and string trimmer
- Assisting the farm manager with tending of honeybee hives to the extent that interest/experience allows
- Leading volunteers in various tasks. We host volunteers between 4 and 8 hours any given week.
Qualifications
- Seeking a career in sustainable agriculture
- Able to work full days in all weather, from the July heat to the cold November rain
- Able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds and stand, walk, kneel and bend for extended periods of time.
- Comfortable working around potential hazards such as fire ants and other stinging insects.
- Dependable, honest and professional.
- You work well both independently and as part of a team.
Compensation: $16.50-$17.50/hour based on experience and education. This is a 40-hour-per-week, permanent position with benefits. Hours are 7:30-4, M-F with occasional work on the weekends.
