Senior Staff Accountant
Fort Belvoir, VA | Hybrid
A respected nonprofit organization headquartered near Fort Belvoir is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to join its finance team. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance, this role will be instrumental in supporting the organization's accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance efforts. The ideal candidate will have strong general accounting experience, exceptional analytical skills, and a collaborative approach to supporting a mission-driven organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
- Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership.
- Analyze budget-to-actual variances and identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash management activities across headquarters and branch locations.
- Prepare and reconcile balance sheet accounts, including cash, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, and accruals.
- Assist with grant, fund, and nonprofit accounting activities while ensuring compliance with GAAP and organizational policies.
- Support annual audits and assist with the preparation of schedules and documentation required by external auditors.
- Assist with the preparation of IRS Form 990 and other regulatory reporting requirements.
- Evaluate and improve accounting processes, internal controls, and financial workflows to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Help document procedures and support accounting system enhancements and automation initiatives.
- Collaborate with finance leadership and cross-functional teams on special projects and organizational initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
- Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
- Experience supporting month-end close and annual audit processes.
- Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
- Experience with Sage Intacct or similar ERP/accounting software preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality.
