Job Description
As an experienced, business-minded patent attorney, your role at BlackRock will involve partnering closely with product engineering and business teams globally to strategically protect BlackRock's intellectual property assets. Your primary responsibilities will include driving and developing BlackRock's patent strategy, identifying and harvesting inventions capable of IP protection, working with external counsel to file and prosecute patents, counseling and educating internal partners on intellectual property issues, analyzing and responding to third-party patent demands, and conducting freedom-to-operate analyses. Additionally, you will contribute to BlackRock's overall IP strategy, stay updated on patent and trade secret legal developments, advise on IP aspects of commercial agreements, and provide guidance on open source software and compliance strategies.
Qualifications Required:
- At least 7 to 10 years of patent prosecution experience in a top-tier law firm or in-house legal department
- Admission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Bar and membership in at least one U.S. state bar
- Experience in strategically building patent portfolios, counseling engineers and business teams, and prosecuting patents
- Degree or equivalent experience in a technical field, preferably in Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering
- Experience in fintech, AI, machine learning, data processing, and/or software patents
- Strong knowledge of open source licenses and related legal issues
- Ability to work across time zones to support BlackRock innovators globally
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
