Overview
The Cost Accountant plays a key role in supporting manufacturing and operations teams by managing product cost data, analyzing operational performance, and ensuring accurate financial reporting tied to production activity. This role partners closely with production, procurement, and finance to maintain cost integrity, improve margin visibility, and support data‑driven operational decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and update product cost structures, including materials, labor, and overhead components, to ensure accurate and timely cost data
- Manage and review Bills of Materials (BOMs), validating inputs against current production processes and material usage
- Support regular cost and margin reporting, providing insights into product performance, cost drivers, and operational efficiency
- Partner with procurement and materials teams to review, confirm, and update material pricing and usage assumptions
- Collaborate with production teams to understand labor inputs and incorporate accurate labor costs into product cost models
- Assist in compiling production‑related financial reports, including routine profit and loss (P&L) summaries for operational leadership
- Analyze variances in costs, yields, and margins, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement
- Contribute to the development and refinement of costing and reporting processes, including support for upcoming ERP implementation activities
- Ensure cost and operational data is accurate, well‑documented, and aligned across systems and reports
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong foundation in product costing and operational finance within a production or manufacturing environment
- Hands‑on experience working with Bills of Materials (BOMs) and cost structures
- Proficiency in Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite for data analysis and reporting
- Familiarity with production or manufacturing ERP systems; experience with Produce Pro, SBT, or similar systems is preferred
- Exposure to labor management or production analytics tools (e.g., Redzone or comparable platforms)
- Ability to work collaboratively with production, operations, procurement, and finance teams
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with close attention to detail
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable insights
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field
- Experience supporting cost, margin, or operational reporting in a production‑focused environment
- Demonstrated ability to manage detailed data while maintaining accuracy and consistency
- Process‑oriented mindset with an interest in continuous improvement
