Here’s a clear and practical breakdown:
Core Roles & Responsibilities1. Bath Analysis & Control
- Regularly analyze plating baths:
- Nickel bath (nickel sulfate, nickel chloride, boric acid)
- Chrome bath (chromic acid, sulfate ratio)
- Check and maintain:
- pH
- Temperature
- Metal concentration
- Additive levels (brighteners, wetting agents)
- Perform titration and chemical analysis
2. Chemical Maintenance
- Calculate and add required chemicals to maintain optimal bath composition
- Prepare fresh plating solutions when needed
- Maintain proper ratios to avoid defects
3. Pre-treatment & Post-treatment Chemistry
- Monitor cleaning, degreasing, and pickling solutions
- Ensure proper activation before plating
- Check passivation and rinsing processes
4. Quality Control Testing
- Test plated components for:
- Coating thickness
- Adhesion
- Corrosion resistance
- Conduct tests such as:
- Hull cell test (for bath performance)
- Salt spray test
- pH and conductivity testing
5. Troubleshooting Defects
Identify and correct issues like:
- Dull or burnt deposits
- Pitting or pinholes
- Peeling or poor adhesion
- Uneven thickness
Recommend corrective actions (chemical adjustments, filtration, etc.)
6. Documentation & Records
- Maintain logs of:
- Daily bath analysis
- Chemical additions
- Test results
- Prepare reports for production and QA teams
7. Chemical Safety & Compliance
- Handle hazardous chemicals safely (nickel salts, chromic acid)
- Ensure proper labeling and storage
- Follow environmental and safety regulations
- Assist in effluent treatment monitoring (ETP)
8. Support Production Team
- Work closely with plant supervisors and operators
- Provide guidelines on process parameters
- Help optimize plating quality and efficiency
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of analytical chemistry
- Experience with titration and lab instruments
- Understanding of electroplating chemistry
- Attention to detail
- Problem-solving ability
Work Environment
- Exposure to acids and metal salts
- Requires PPE and strict lab safety practices
Career Growth
