Operating within the framework of a Risk Retention Group (RRG), the Senior Underwriter will bring deep technical expertise, an active insurance producer license, and a genuine commitment to the populations we serve. The ideal candidate combines rigorous analytical discipline with a consultative approach and thrives in a mission-aligned, collaborative environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & KEY OUTCOMES
1. Risk Evaluation & Underwriting Decision-Making
- Review, analyze, and make binding decisions on applications for professional liability, general liability, and related insurance products submitted by social workers, behavioral health professionals, agencies, and other eligible program participants.
- Conduct thorough risk assessments evaluating practice areas, prior claims history, licensure and regulatory standing, jurisdictional exposure, and compliance with RRG program guidelines.
- Apply senior-level judgment to accept, modify, decline, or non-renew risks in accordance with underwriting authority and established program parameters.
- Serve as an internal subject-matter expert and technical resource for junior underwriting staff and cross-functional teams.
2. Risk Retention Group (RRG) Program Oversight
- Maintain deep working knowledge of RRG regulatory requirements, including multi-state compliance obligations, domicile state regulations, and LRRA (Liability Risk Retention Act) requirements.
- Partner with ASI leadership, legal counsel, and actuarial resources to ensure the RRG's underwriting book remains financially sound, adequately priced, and compliant.
- Participate in RRG board reporting, loss development reviews, and reserve analysis discussions as required.
- Monitor overall portfolio performance; identify emerging risk trends and recommend program adjustments to maintain underwriting profitability.
3. Coverage Determination & Policy Administration
- Recommend and document policy terms, coverage limits, exclusions, endorsements, and premium structures appropriate to each applicant's practice profile and exposure level.
- Collaborate with carrier partners, reinsurers, and third-party administrators to maintain alignment on rating methodology, underwriting guidelines, and treaty requirements.
- Prepare, issue, and quality-review quotes, policy changes, endorsements, and renewals with accuracy and within established service timeframes.
- Ensure all policy documentation meets regulatory and compliance standards across applicable jurisdictions.
4. Customer Engagement & Consultative Support
- Provide authoritative consultative guidance to internal customer service, sales, and operations teams on complex underwriting scenarios, eligibility questions, and coverage interpretations.
- Engage directly with applicants, policyholders, and association partners to clarify underwriting decisions, gather documentation, and deliver clear, respectful explanations.
- Develop and deliver risk management education including best practices for liability mitigation tailored to social work professionals and organizations.
5. Data Integrity, Reporting & Process Improvement
- Maintain precise and complete records of underwriting decisions, risk documentation, and policy transactions in ASI's systems of record.
- Produce regular underwriting reports and analytics to support leadership decision-making, board reporting, and regulatory filings.
- Identify and champion opportunities to streamline underwriting workflows, reduce turnaround times, and improve quality controls.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of underwriting manuals, rating tools, training materials, and procedural documentation.
6.Industry Intelligence & Regulatory Awareness
- Monitor legal, regulatory, and industry trends affecting professional liability exposure for social workers and behavioral health providers.
- Track legislative changes, licensure developments, and claims patterns that may require program adjustments.
