Position Summary
Akela is seeking a highly qualified Accounting/Financial Reporting Manager to support federal clients in strengthening financial reporting, accounting operations, audit readiness, and compliance with federal financial management requirements. This role requires a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with strong technical accounting knowledge, experience preparing or supporting federal financial statements, and the ability to manage client-facing workstreams and deliverables.
The ideal candidate has experience applying federal accounting standards, supporting financial statement reporting, interpreting accounting guidance, and working with internal controls over financial reporting. This individual will serve as a trusted advisor to clients, helping agencies improve reporting accuracy, address audit findings, enhance accounting processes, and meet federal reporting deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage financial reporting and accounting support activities for federal clients.
- Support the preparation, review, and analysis of federal financial statements and related disclosures.
- Provide subject matter expertise on federal accounting standards, financial reporting requirements, and applicable guidance.
- Advise on accounting treatment, reporting requirements, reconciliations, and audit support needs.
- Support audit readiness and audit remediation activities, including preparation of workpapers, corrective action plans, and supporting documentation.
- Assess and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting, including alignment with OMB Circular A-123.
- Review accounting policies, procedures, reconciliations, and reporting processes to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Manage project tasks, timelines, deliverables, and team members to ensure high-quality and timely delivery.
- Develop client-ready deliverables, including financial reports, technical accounting memos, audit support packages, presentations, and status briefings.
- Translate complex accounting and reporting guidance into practical business processes and actionable recommendations.
- Provide subject matter expertise in federal accounting practices and reporting requirements.
Qualifications
- Experience: At least 8 years of hands-on experience providing accounting or financial management support to federal agencies.
- Federal Program Experience: Experience supporting federal financial statement preparation, reporting, audit readiness, or audit remediation.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
- Travel: Not currently anticipated.
- US Citizenship
- Certifications: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required. Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) or other compliance-related certifications are highly desirable.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of federal accounting standards and reporting requirements, including familiarity with the U.S. Standard General Ledger, Treasury Financial Manual, OMB Circular A-136, and OMB Circular A-123.
- Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex accounting matters to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Problem Solving: Proven ability to analyze complex accounting and reporting issues and develop practical, compliant solutions.
- Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, client-focused environment with both internal and external stakeholders.
