Teacher, CTE – Journalism & Student Publications

Primary Purpose

Instruct students in journalism, multimedia production, and publication, supporting the development of technical skills, creativity, and communication. Responsible for producing the campus yearbook and newspaper, overseeing student‑led content creation, editing, design, publication, and managing activity funds in compliance with district procedures. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society and earn appropriate endorsements.

Qualifications

  • Education / Certification: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent associate’s degree with wage-earning relevant experience.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate or related training/work experience under the District of Innovation Plan (DOI).
  • Demonstrated competency in assigned CTE subject area.

Special Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of journalism principles, media ethics, publication standards, and print/digital media production.
  • Knowledge of CTE curriculum and instructional practices.
  • Proficiency in multimedia and desktop publishing tools such as photography, video production, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and yearbook platforms.
  • Experience with photojournalism, AP style editing, and publication design.
  • Ability to advise and manage student publications (yearbook and newspaper) and meet production deadlines.
  • Ability to manage activity funds and maintain financial records in accordance with district procedures.
  • Knowledge of copyright, fair use, and student media law.
  • Strong classroom management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Experience

  • Student teaching, internship, or classroom experience preferred.
  • Experience in journalism, publishing, or multimedia production preferred.

Instructional Strategies

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill TEKS requirements for journalism and multimedia courses.
  • Teach writing, editing, design, photography, and digital media production skills.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs.
  • Foster creativity, critical thinking, and responsible journalism practices.
  • Assess student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.

Student Publications (Yearbook & Newspaper)

  • Serve as advisor for campus yearbook and newspaper programs.
  • Oversee production including content planning, writing, editing, and design.
  • Manage publication timelines and guide student journalism practices.
  • Coordinate printing, distribution, and digital publication.

Classroom Management & Organization

  • Create a classroom environment that supports learning and promotes students’ physical and social development.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in selecting instructional materials and equipment.
  • Compile, maintain, and file required reports and records.
  • Present a positive role model for students and support the district mission.

Communication

  • Maintain open communication with students, parents, and staff.
  • Collaborate with campus staff to ensure coverage of school events and activities.
  • Promote student publications within the school and community.

Activity Fund Management

  • Manage activity funds in accordance with district policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure timely deposits.
  • Monitor budgets and submit purchase requests.

Other

  • Maintain professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and committees.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Adhere to the district’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business.
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversee instructional aide(s) and student volunteers supporting the print shop.

Compensation

$46,500 to $73,165 per year.
