Job Title: Server Administrator / SME
Location: Calgary, AB (Downtown)
Work Style: 100% Onsite
Job Type: 6-month contract
Pay Rate: $68 - $74 per hour
Overview
Our client, a leading Canadian-based integrated energy company, is seeking an experienced Server Administrator / Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support and manage enterprise-scale infrastructure across Windows, Azure, and VMware environments.
This role will be responsible for ensuring high availability, performance, and security of critical systems while supporting cloud migration initiatives and driving operational excellence across on-premise and cloud platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
Windows Infrastructure Management
Manage, configure, and troubleshoot enterprise Windows Server environments (AD, DNS, DHCP, IIS, GPOs, clustering)
Ensure system performance, scalability, and high availability across infrastructure
Active Directory & Identity Services
Administer Active Directory including user/group management, OU structures, GPOs, and domain controllers
Perform AD health checks, backup/recovery, and security hardening
Azure Cloud & Migration Support
Support Azure IaaS and PaaS services including VMs, storage, networking, and backup solutions
Assist in migration of on-prem workloads using Azure Migrate, ASR, and ARM templates
Collaborate with Cloud Architects on cloud design and optimization
Automation & Scripting
Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts to automate operational tasks
Support Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) practices
VMware Virtualization
Manage VMware environments including ESXi, vCenter, VM provisioning, HA/DRS, and performance tuning
Perform P2V/V2V migrations and manage snapshots and backups
Monitoring, Security & Compliance
Monitor system health, logs, and performance using enterprise tools
Ensure patching, compliance, and security standards are maintained
Support L2/L3 incident, problem, and change management processes
Collaboration & Support
Work closely with internal teams, SMEs, and cloud architects
Provide technical documentation and contribute to process improvements
Deliver strong customer-facing support and timely issue resolution
Required Qualifications:
6+ years of experience in server administration and infrastructure support
Strong expertise in Windows Server environments (2008 to latest) and Active Directory
Hands-on experience with Azure cloud services (IaaS/PaaS)
Strong experience with VMware (ESXi, vCenter, HA/DRS, migrations)
Proficiency in PowerShell scripting and automation
Experience implementing high-availability and disaster recovery solutions
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (ARM templates, automation tools)
Experience with Azure migration tools (ASR, Azure Migrate, MAP toolkit)
Exposure to multi-cloud environments
Microsoft Azure certification (e.g., AZ-103 / AZ-104 / 70-533 or equivalent)
Experience with data center migrations (P2V/V2V)
Knowledge of Linux workloads in Azure environments
