Senior Process Development Engineer
WhatJobs DirectJob Description
Our client, a leader in the chemical manufacturing industry, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Process Development Engineer to join their established team. This role is critical for optimizing existing chemical processes and developing innovative new ones that enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Based in our client's state-of-the-art facility in **Calgary, Alberta, CA**, you will be instrumental in scaling up laboratory processes to pilot and commercial production levels. Your responsibilities will include designing process flow diagrams, performing mass and energy balance calculations, conducting hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), and troubleshooting production issues. You will work closely with R&D chemists, plant engineers, and operations teams to ensure seamless technology transfer and continuous process improvement. The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, coupled with significant experience in process design, scale-up, and optimization within the chemical industry. Expertise in simulation software (e.g., Aspen Plus, HYSYS), a strong understanding of chemical reaction engineering, thermodynamics, and separation processes are essential. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills are required, as is the ability to communicate complex technical information effectively to diverse stakeholders. This is an on-site position, demanding hands-on involvement in laboratory, pilot plant, and manufacturing environments.
Key Responsibilities: Design, develop, and optimize chemical processes from laboratory scale to commercial production. Conduct process simulations using software such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS to evaluate performance and identify improvements. Perform mass and energy balance calculations for complex chemical systems. Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). Lead and participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOP studies. Troubleshoot and resolve process-related issues in pilot plant and manufacturing operations. Evaluate and recommend new technologies and equipment for process improvement. Collaborate with R&D, engineering, and operations teams on technology transfer and process implementation. Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and provide training to operational staff. Manage process development projects, including scope, budget, and schedule. Analyze process data to identify opportunities for cost reduction, yield improvement, and waste minimization. Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. Write detailed technical reports and present findings to management and project teams. Stay current with advancements in chemical engineering and process technology. Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering. Minimum of 7 years of experience in process development, scale-up, and optimization within the chemical or petrochemical industry. Proficiency in process simulation software (e.g., Aspen Plus, HYSYS, PRO/II). Strong understanding of chemical reaction engineering, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and separation processes. Experience with Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and HAZOP studies. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Proven project management capabilities. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting technical information. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with cross-functional departments. Experience with pilot plant operations and troubleshooting is highly desirable. Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility is an asset.
