Lab Technician Labs Pathology

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Registers specimens and verifies for entry into the LIS system.
• Labels cassettes, slides.
• Performs pre-analytical procedures (e.g., centrifugation, aliquot, prepare smears and solutions, etc.)
• Sorts, allocates and delivers specimens to work stations, and loads onto instruments as appropriate.
• Receives, unpacks and sorts incoming specimens.
• Prepares specimens for send-out to external clients.
• Operation and maintenance of pathology equipment (tissue processors, stainers, coverslip equipment, thinprep, etc.)
• Participates in performing basic QC and inventory management
• Printing and distribution of laboratory reports, filing requisitions.
• Responds to all customer telephone inquiries.
• Rotates through different work areas as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant/Technician Program or equivalent experience required.
• OSMT or CSMLS certification required.
• Minimum 1 year of experience in Pathology and Cytology lab is preferred.
• Knowledge of Pathology and Cytology processing, Cytology specimen preparation, and solution preparation is an asset.
• Must demonstrate ability to work independently and prioritize workload in a fast paced environment.
• Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Must be able to work cooperatively and constructively with other team members.
• Must understand and be committed to the mission and values of St Michael's Hospital
• Must be punctual and have an excellent attendance record.
