Abdin| Department of Materials Engineering | Faculty of Applied Science Compensation Range $6,251.00 - $8,986.00 CAD Monthly The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. Job Summary The Department of Materials Engineering at UBC invites applications for a Research Scientist position in the Advanced Composite Materials and Structures (ACMS) Group. The Research Scientist will provide technical leadership for research programs focused on the development, scale-up, characterization, and application of sustainable carbon fibers and multifunctional composite materials. The position combines responsibilities in experimental research, laboratory operations, student supervision, technical reporting, and research program management. The successful candidate will play a central role in advancing research activities related to sustainable carbon fiber manufacturing, advanced fibrous materials, multifunctional composites, and related materials processing technologies. Organizational Status Report to Dr. Yasmine Abdin Work Performed Developing protocols and methods for the production, processing, and characterization of carbon fibers, fibrous materials, and composite materials; Conducting research related to sustainable carbon fiber manufacturing, multifunctional composites, and advanced materials processing technologies; Developing, optimizing, and scaling of carbon fiber manufacturing processes, including melt-spinning, melt-blowing, stabilization, and carbonization operations; Designing, directing, and analyzing laboratory experiments; interpreting results and developing technical conclusions and recommendations; Performing materials characterization and testing of fibers, nonwoven materials, and composite structures using appropriate analytical techniques; Preparing technical reports, project deliverables, milestone reports, presentations, and documentation for research sponsors and funding agencies; Training and supervising undergraduate, graduate, co-op, and internship students working collaboratively on research projects; Reviewing scientific literature and assisting in identifying future research directions and experimental approaches; Overseeing laboratory records, standard operating procedures, technical documentation, and experimental databases; Overseeing laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, laboratory safety activities, and recommendations for equipment and supply purchases. Consequence of Error/Judgement Errors in judgment or procedural oversight could impact the accuracy and reliability of research findings, resulting in delays to project deliverables and potential loss of funding. Inappropriate handling of materials, equipment, or safety procedures may also pose risks to laboratory safety and operational continuity. Supervision Received Works independently under the supervision of Dr. Yasmine Abdin. Supervision Given May supervise graduate students or those who are working in the lab. Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science. Minimum of one year of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. - Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own - Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion Preferred Qualifications An MASc or PhD degree in Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline isa considered an asset. Demonstrated experience conducting experimental research in a laboratory environment. Demonstrated experience in alternative-feedstock carbon fiber manufacturing, fibrous materials processing, or nonwoven materials manufacturing. Demonstrated experience in composite materials manufacturing and characterization. Demonstrated ability to prepare technical documentation and reports.
