Location:
This role is hybrid, providing some flexibility to work from home. However, candidates must reside in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and be prepared to attend in-person meetings as required. Occasional travel to client sites or workshops may also be necessary.
Position Overview:
We want you to join our team and contribute to our continued growth and success!
As a Senior User Experience Designer (Design Systems), you will lead the creation, evolution, and governance of a scalable design system supporting a major Canadian retail client’s digital ecosystem across web and mobile platforms.
You will play a critical role in transforming existing designs into a cohesive, accessible, and component-driven system that enables consistency and efficiency across multiple brands and digital properties. Working closely with engineering, product, and content teams—as well as external partners—you will ensure the design system is scalable, well-documented, and effectively adopted across teams.
While the primary focus is design systems, you may also contribute to broader UX initiatives to support high-quality, user-centered digital experiences.
Responsibilities
Design System Strategy and Development:
- Lead the development, evolution, and rollout of a unified design system across multiple digital properties
- Audit existing designs to identify reusable components, patterns, and opportunities for standardization
- Define and maintain design tokens, component libraries, and system architecture
Governance and Documentation:
- Establish and maintain governance models to ensure consistent adoption of design standards
- Create and manage comprehensive documentation, usage guidelines, and accessibility standards
- Ensure long-term scalability, maintainability, and system integrity
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Partner closely with engineering teams to ensure components are scalable and technically feasible
- Collaborate with content teams to align typography, imagery, and content presentation standards
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external agency partners to maintain alignment and consistency
Tools and Implementation:
- Create and manage Figma libraries and design system assets
- Facilitate collaboration and feedback loops within Figma and related tools
- Ensure alignment between design and development through effective use of design tokens and front-end standards
UX Contribution and Continuous Improvement:
- Support broader UX/UI initiatives across web and mobile experiences as needed
- Advocate for accessibility (AODA/WCAG) and user-centered design best practices
- Continuously improve design system processes, workflows, and adoption
Qualifications
- Residency in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with availability for in-person meetings as needed
- 5+ years of experience in UX/UI design, with at least 2 years focused on design systems
- Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Proven experience building and maintaining scalable design systems in Figma or similar tools
- Strong understanding of responsive design, component-based architecture, and accessibility standards (AODA/WCAG)
- Experience collaborating with developers using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and design tokens
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to align cross-functional teams
Preferred Experience:
- Experience working in enterprise or multi-brand environments
- Familiarity with Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) or other CMS/DXP platforms
- Experience working within agile environments and design system version control practices
- Proficiency with tools such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and design documentation platforms
- Strong portfolio demonstrating design systems, component libraries, and UX work
