Heart Lake First Nation #469 is located approximately 70 kilometres northeast of the town of Lac La Biche, Alberta, and 220 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. Kohl's School is seeking a full-time certified Elementary School Teacher. We are seeking a highly energetic and motivated Grade 1/2 Teacher.

Teacher Job Description Reports to: Principal

Summary

The teacher collaborates closely with the Heart Lake educational team to ensure that students receive holistic, culturally relevant, and personally meaningful experiences tailored to Heart Lake First Nation members.

Job Duties

  • Develop and monitor individual learning plans with learners.
  • Plan lessons and curriculum based on the diverse learning needs of each student and group of students using the Alberta program of learning as a guide.
  • Provide relevant, practical, hands-on/community learning opportunities.
  • Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, which include group or individualized instruction as well as computer programs that help students make learning gains.
  • Administer assessments to determine individual and group progress.
  • Create a climate that encourages and supports learning.
  • Complete and maintain appropriate student registration, attendance, and assessment records, and ensure timely submission of data.
  • Ensure effective classroom management that enhances student learning.
  • Reflect on and encourage self-improvement training to promote lifelong learning.
  • Attend in-service, staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to teach students of diverse abilities and backgrounds and overcome barriers to success in a multi-level classroom setting.
  • Understanding of First Nations culture and worldview.
  • Ability to build a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the developmental needs and interests of students.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and through correct written grammar and usage.
  • Good classroom management skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Team player who can collaborate with colleagues.
  • Maintain a clean and professional classroom environment.
  • Ability to interact with local First Nations parents, community leaders, school administrators, and school staff members.

Schedule

September to June, with breaks and special activities as per the School Calendar. Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education.
  • Direct experience with First Nations students.
  • Two to three years of experience teaching in an elementary setting.
  • Willingness to engage with community members at various gatherings/events.
  • Valid Alberta teaching certificate
  • Clean Criminal record check and Vulnerable Sector clearance.
