Career Opportunity

We’re hiring a Supervisor, Rail Vehicles to join our Streetcar Maintenance Team. In this role, you will be responsible planning, scheduling, directing and supervising the daily scheduled activities and maintenance personnel, forepersons and staff employees of a designated operating carhouse, or activities within an overhaul facility on a 24-hours/day and 7-days/week basis. This involves providing guidance and resources to enable high work performance to maintain the up-keep of the assigned facility and foster a safe working environment.

What You Will Do

Directly reporting to the Manager, Vehicle Maintenance, the incumbent will assist with the supervision and providing leadership of the section. Responsibilities include overseeing project management activities, administrative duties, program development, ensuring staff recieve appropriate training. Additional duties may be assigned as operational needs arise.

This also involves the following:

  • Supervising and co-ordinating the daily work activities and associated administrative activities of the assigned location to provide timely and efficient maintenance services including the inspection, repair, cleaning and preparation/delivery of vehicles for revenue services.
  • May also be required to work at various Streetcar Maintenance department facilities, in accordance with operational needs. This position manages a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week operation and is required to be available to deal with unusual or emergency situations outside of normal working hours, and the work involves various shifts and off days as per business needs.
  • Assist in the preparation of the financial budget and preparation of various documents and reports for the facility.
  • Ensure that all employees are properly trained in work and safety procedures, maintaining a harmonious work environment.
  • Develop, maintain and adjust work schedules, in accordance with safety practices, and changing priorities, weather conditions, etc.
  • Ensure timely and efficient maintenance services involving inspection, repairing, cleaning and preparation/delivery of vehicles for revenue service; or providing carhouses with major and minor repairs to the bodies, trucks and electrical portions of vehicles, the supply of various repaired/overhauled/modified electrical, mechanical pneumatic and hydraulic components or responding to all regular trouble calls and emergency situations to operating streetcar lines.
  • Ensure the appropriate number of vehicles are available to support daily schedule requirements of service or carhouse operations or monitoring mainline operations to ensure adequate service line coverage.
  • Recommend and implement new improvements to equipment and/or methods of work, developing and revising work methods/procedures.

What Qualifications Do You Bring

  • Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline, or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent, combined with several years of directly related work experience including experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, HVAC, electrical and electronic components utilized on urban transit rail vehicles combined with a sound knowledge of the diagnostic, inspection, repair, overhaul and maintenance procedures for these components and vehicle body structure.
  • Sound knowledge of how the various skills associated with the maintenance of urban transit vehicles are used in a running repair/major repair environment.
  • Familiarity with budgetary principles and the ability to prepare various reports, analyses and recommendations regarding work operations.
  • Sound judgment, well-developed supervisory, organizational, interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills combined with an ability to motivate staff and to co-ordinate efforts of others to accomplish objectives.
  • Possess a valid class “G” driver’s license for the Province of Ontario and the ability to upgrade to a class “DZ” license.
  • Required to attend and successfully complete the Operations Training Centre Department’s Surface Rule Book program.
