As a Buyer II at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will play a key role in ensuring the uninterrupted supply of materials that support our mission to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. In this role, you will manage the procurement of direct and indirect materials by balancing cost, quality, delivery, and inventory objectives while supporting manufacturing operations.
You will develop and maintain strong supplier relationships, execute purchasing strategies, and collaborate with cross-functional teams—including Manufacturing, Planning, Quality, Engineering, Finance, and Supplier Quality—to ensure material availability and operational excellence. The Buyer II is responsible for managing supplier performance, resolving supply disruptions, supporting new product introductions, and identifying opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.
Success in this position requires strong analytical skills, sound business judgment, effective communication, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Procure direct and indirect materials to support production schedules while maintaining inventory targets.
- Create, manage, and monitor purchase orders to ensure on-time delivery and accurate order fulfillment.
- Build and maintain effective supplier relationships to improve performance, responsiveness, quality, and service.
- Monitor supplier delivery, capacity, and quality metrics, proactively mitigating supply risks and resolving issues.
- Analyze inventory levels, demand forecasts, and MRP recommendations to optimize purchasing decisions.
- Partner with Planning, Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, and Finance to support production continuity and business objectives.
- Participate in supplier negotiations related to pricing, lead times, delivery schedules, and contractual terms.
- Support new product introductions, product transfers, change orders (COs), and supplier qualification activities.
- Identify and implement opportunities for cost savings, inventory optimization, and continuous process improvement.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procurement procedures, regulatory requirements, and quality standards.
- Maintain accurate procurement data and supplier records within ERP systems.
- Contribute to Lean and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance procurement efficiency and operational performance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree with 1 year of experience, or High School Diploma (or equivalent) with a minimum of 3 years of procurement, supply chain, or relevant experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Preferred degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Operations, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience working with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, or JD Edwards.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience with MRP planning, inventory management, and supplier relationship management.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple functions.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- APICS CPIM or CSCP, CIPS, or other relevant supply chain certification.
- Knowledge of FDA, ISO, or GMP-regulated manufacturing environments.
- Experience supporting supplier negotiations and cost reduction initiatives.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience with supplier performance metrics and KPI management.
- Ability to travel occasionally to supplier locations as business needs require.
- Multilingual skills are a plus.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range estimated for this position based in Maryland is $59,400.00–$79,200.00.This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy.
