At the ICCT, we provide high-quality, timely, data-driven research to public government officials as well as to civil society and the media. Our mission-driven and culturally diverse workplace values intelligence, flexibility, transparency, and good humor.

The ICCT has an immediate opening for a highly motivated and committed Associate Researcher to join the organization’s Global Program. The Associate Researcher will work in the Program’s Global Analysis and Policy Support (GAPS) team to inform development of government regulations and other policies that improve vehicle efficiency and benefit climate and health. This person will produce high-quality research and analysis of policies targeting on-road transportation, particularly light-duty vehicles, and support team efforts to monitor and publicize the global electric vehicle (EV) transition. This person will report to the Lead or a Senior Researcher in the GAPS team and work closely with ICCT Regional teams, for example on projects in Latin America and Africa.

You Will

  • Inform the development of vehicle regulations and other policies by producing objective, high-quality technical and regulatory design analyses
  • Review and learn vehicle regulations across global markets and apply best practices in informing new policies
  • Analyze government policy proposals to project impacts on vehicle technology deployment, greenhouse gas emissions, and consumer costs/benefits
  • Collect, clean, analyze, and interpret large datasets, and translate findings into clear technical outputs and policy-relevant insights
  • Track vehicle regulations, electric vehicle adoption, charging infrastructure deployment, and adoption of related policies around the world
  • Write clear and concise technical reports, policy briefs, articles, and internal memos
  • Explain regulations and present findings in public and private forums
  • Collaborate effectively with the ICCT’s Global and Regional teams

You Have

  • An advanced degree (Masters or PhD or equivalent) in engineering, environmental science, public policy, economics, transportation or a related discipline, OR a bachelor’s degree plus at least two-years work experience in the above-mentioned field(s)
  • Experience analyzing vehicle regulations, such as CO2 standards, fuel consumption standards, emissions standards, and “EV Availability Standards” (desired)
  • Familiarity with vehicle powertrains, including internal combustion engine, battery-electric, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles; emission control technologies and type approval process
  • Demonstrated skills in data collection, research, literature review, analytical rigor, and drawing conclusions from analytical research
  • Proficiency in Excel; Python or R skills desired
  • Basic familiarity with standard AI tools, such as Claude, Copilot, and ChatGPT
  • Strong English communication – both written and verbal – and presentation skills. Reading and writing proficiency in a second language is a plus
  • The ability to work independently with limited supervision, being highly organized, self-directed, quick-learning, creative, and strategic in problem-solving
  • Availability for occasional work travel
