HJF is seeking a Scientist I develop and conduct research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.
This position will be in support of the Complex Exposure Threats Center of Excellence (CETCE) at the VA Medical Center in Washington, DC. This research position will support the center’s human subjects research portfolio focused on environmental exposures and health outcomes, by focusing on managing and implementing a health monitoring research protocol and contributing to a collaborative project. Applicants who can support and independently oversee research methodology implementation, achieving clearly defined scientific objectives, will be given priority. The selected candidate will lead and coordinate with staff to ensure successful project execution, including meeting milestones related to data sharing and sponsor reporting. Responsibilities include ensuring the accuracy of data collection, analysis, and interpretation to maintain high standards of quality and integrity. Adherence to research protocols and data accuracy is paramount, including the cleaning and scoring of measures for comprehensive statistical analysis and modeling. The Scientist I will provide oversight and review for junior team members, fostering a collaborative environment. The role also involves coordinating with internal and external project collaborators to ensure the seamless integration of multidisciplinary efforts. Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsive to project timelines, resources, and ensure adherence to regulatory and ethical standards.

Responsibilities
- Support ongoing human subjects research focused on environmental exposures and health outcomes.
- Participate in active data collection from participants.
- Conduct data quality assessments for accuracy and validity, ensuring compliance. Establish and maintain database files and progress reports for studies, projects, and programs.
- Perform signal processing on biophysiological measures such as EEG or PPG.
- Perform scientific literature searches, identification, and retrieval.
- Perform administrative duties such as:
- Developing protocol manuals and data collection instruments.
- Responding to requests and questions from individuals, institutions, government agencies, and funding agencies.
- Assists with preparing and submitting grants, manuscripts, technical reports, and presentations, including editing and formatting documents. Distributes manuscripts and reports to all scientific collaborators as required.
- Collaborate with other research staff, investigators, referring providers, and scientific leads both within the assigned research site and across other research sites as needed for recruitment, best practices, training, and other purposes, as needed.
- Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.

- Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Doctorate Degree in Biology, Psychology, Environmental Health, Public Health, or a related field. required.
- Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
- Experience in authoring technical papers, presentations, and reports.
- Ability to deliver and present complex scientific concepts to a broad grange of audiences.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to supervise others.
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.
- Ability to obtain a Without Compensation (WOC) appointment with the DC VA Medical Center.
Physical Capabilities
- Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Compensation
- The annual salary range for this position is $77,600-$99,700. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
