In this role, you will set up and operate CNC vertical machining centers and other machine tools using programs provided by CAM programmers. You will contribute to the fabrication of high-precision components while maintaining strict safety, quality, and tolerance requirements.

This position offers hands-on exposure to machining, tooling, fixtures, and measurement in support of defense and industrial programs.

Duties

  • Set up and operate CNC vertical machining centers and other machine tools using CAM-generated programs.
  • Edit and modify G-code and M-code at the machine control to support fixture build-out and machining accuracy.
  • Select appropriate cutters, tool holders, and tooling to support machining operations.
  • Design and build fixtures as required to support machining and prototype development.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, verbal instructions, and sketches.
  • Perform machining operations while maintaining dimensional accuracy to tolerances tighter than ±.001".
  • Use precision measuring instruments including vernier calipers, inside/outside and depth micrometers, gage blocks, surface gauges, height gauges, and dial indicators.
  • Support operations across a well-equipped prototype development shop, including multiple machine tools.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
  • Adhere to all shop, facility, and division safety policies, including proper use of PPE.
  • Safely operate forklifts and support material handling activities as required.

Requirements

  • Experience setting up and operating CNC machining equipment, including vertical machining centers.
  • Working knowledge of G-code and M-code with the ability to edit CAM-generated programs at the control.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and GD&T specifications.
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling selection, and fixture setup.
  • Proficiency using precision measurement tools to verify tight tolerances.
  • Ability to perform machine shop math and basic trigonometry.
  • Experience working in a prototype or industrial machine shop environment.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Comfort working in indoor and outdoor industrial environments, including hot, cold, and confined spaces.
  • Completion of a machinist apprenticeship, trade school certificate, or journeyman CNC machinist qualification preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • DoD Secret Clearance or ability to obtain one.
