What We Want

The Automotive Technician II, under general supervision, performs skilled maintenance and repair operations on light/medium duty vehicles and equipment. May assist in directing the work of other technicians and helpers.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Four years of related experience in repair and maintenance of gasoline-engine vehicles and equipment.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license to operate motor vehicles and a good driving record

  • Must be able to obtain State of Texas class “B” vehicle operator license (Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement) within 60 days of employment

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Significant understanding of light/medium duty vehicle maintenance and repair.

  • Ability to utilize maintenance software, shop tools, and equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Automotive/Diesel – Trade school.

  • Commercial vehicle operator license with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement.

  • Three or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in related specialties or equivalent original equipment manufacturer (OEM) certifications.

  • Supervisory experience.

 

Responsibilities

  • Repair & Preventative Maintenance- Performs preventative maintenance inspections. Completes and updates manual and computerized service orders. Performs skilled tasks in the general maintenance and repair of light/medium duty vehicles and equipment including servicing, adjusting and repair of gasoline and diesel engines and all vehicle components. Replace parts (ex. exhaust systems, batteries, belts, hoses, etc.).

  • Installs and programs Canceivers.

  • Diagnostics- Uses diagnostic tools to identify and troubleshoot engine, transmission, and body controller issues. Troubleshoots complex problems related to engine performance, electrical systems, and more. Troubleshoots complex HVAC related issues. Troubleshoots aftertreatment issues.

  • Administration- Ensures shop area is always kept clean and without clutter. Uses computers to obtain vehicle maintenance specifications and administer fleet wide maintenance program, including notification to appropriate leaders upon neglect or failure to maintain vehicles. Identifies replacement part numbers and submits parts requests for necessary repairs.

  • Driving- Assists by driving a DOT-regulated vehicle in test driving, recovery of disabled vehicles, delivery of vehicles, etc.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and/or move heavy weight objects.

  • Frequent lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and walking.

  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat.

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.

  • This position is security sensitive.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules, and procedures.

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements.

  • Persons in this position will be required to drive state vehicle to travel to various parts of campus and are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc.

  • This position will be covered by DOT regulations and will be included in a random drug and alcohol testing pool.

  • Works beyond normal office hours and/or on weekends. The working hours for this position will be 10 am to 7 pm. This position will also be encouraged to work the two special events a year.

  • Will be required to work Saturday home football games as needed.
