Job Overview
We are seeking a dependable, safety-conscious, and detail-oriented Maintenance Labourer/Groundskeeper to join our School District team. This position is responsible for maintaining and enhancing school grounds, outdoor facilities, and building surroundings to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and the community.
The successful candidate will perform a variety of groundskeeping, landscaping, and general maintenance duties, including lawn care, planting, pruning, irrigation system maintenance, litter collection, and minor repairs. Seasonal responsibilities include snow and ice removal, operating snow-clearing equipment, applying sand or de-icing materials, and ensuring safe access to school buildings, walkways, parking lots, and other district properties during winter conditions.
The ideal candidate will have experience in landscaping, and general maintenance practices, along with strong organizational and time management skills. The ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and efficiently manage multiple responsibilities across various school district sites is essential. Responsibilities
- Maintain school grounds, playing fields, landscaped areas, parking lots, walkways, and other district properties to ensure they are safe, clean, and well-presented.
- Perform lawn maintenance duties including mowing, trimming, edging, watering, fertilizing, and weed control.
- Plant, prune, and care for trees, shrubs, and other landscape features.
- Operate and maintain a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, including tractors, ride-on mowers, utility vehicles, string trimmers, chainsaws, and power equipment, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair irrigation systems, fencing, and other outdoor infrastructure as required.
- Perform general labour and maintenance tasks, including litter collection, pressure washing, minor repairs, and facility support work.
- Assist with setting up and dismantling equipment, furniture, and facilities for school and district events.
- Conduct routine inspections of grounds equipment and playgrounds, reporting hazards, deficiencies, or maintenance requirements promptly.
- Perform snow and ice control operations during winter months, including snow plowing, snow blowing, shovelling, sanding, and the application of de-icing materials to ensure safe access to school buildings, walkways, parking lots, and roadways.
- Complete preventative maintenance and basic servicing of grounds equipment and vehicles.
- Follow safe work procedures, district policies, and Occupational Health and Safety regulations at all times.
- Work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong time management, organizational, and prioritization skills to efficiently complete assignments across multiple district sites.
- Respond to operational and seasonal requirements, including emergency call-outs
Experience
- Experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, facilities maintenance, or a related field.
- Ability to safely operate grounds maintenance equipment, including tractors, ride-on mowers, snow removal equipment, and power tools.
- Knowledge of landscape maintenance, horticultural practices, and irrigation systems.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to organize workloads, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in a variety of weather conditions throughout the year.
- Valid driver's licence; experience operating commercial or municipal equipment is considered an asset.
