Summary

Health Unit Coordinator:
The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) functions under the supervision of physicians or nurses to provide coordination of admissions, transfers and discharges for patients. The individual is responsible and accountable for complete and accurate processing of information, communicating and collaborating with healthcare team members to facilitate patient care. The Health Unit Coordinator will facilitate the acquisition of materials and assist with clerical activities to support the unit’s operations.

Job Description

Health Unit Coordinator:

Acquires information and processes patient related orders and performs other clerical duties to facilitate effective unit operations. Communicates information effectively to team members providing patient care to optimize the team's function and enhance productivity. Coordinates processes associated with admissions, transfers and discharges to ensure proper and effective completion of the patient's care. Collects and distributes medical records as necessary to ensure the proper dissemination of patient care information. Orders and maintains appropriate supply inventory for the unit to provide the unit with adequate levels of materials to be utilized at any time. Coordinates and schedules appointments or procedures to ensure the patient care needs are completed in a timely manner. Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions. Other duties as assigned.

Medical Assistant: 

Prepares instruments, equipment and materials needed for patient care; keeps exam room aseptic, neat and supplied. Obtains and documents complete patient data in a timely and accurate manner. Prepares patients for exams and assists provider with exams/tests/procedures as needed. Instructs patients in preparation for specific procedures and tests when appropriate. Performs basic procedures as ordered by provider and within scope of practice. Processes provider's orders, prepares appropriate forms, and schedules appointments and services. Arranges for hospital admission when indicated. Ensures that charges are submitted in a timely manner. Assists the provider with obtaining test results. Proficiently uses computer applications as required for patient care. Processes prescriptions as directed. Communicates with patients regarding their concerns, collects information, and relays this information professionally and efficiently to the provider. Completes clerical or insurance processes to ensure the proper documentation and submission of charges is completed in a timely manner. Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Health Unit Coordinator:

Medical terminology course or training preferred.
Must have at least 6 months of healthcare business experience in any of the following areas: Physician practice, unit clerk, hospital or clinic, or 6 months of direct patient care experience. Must have computer experience. Experience working as a Health Unit Coordinator preferred.

Medical Assistant: 

Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Program or applicable on the job clinical experience.
If Medical Assistant Program has not been completed, must have applicable on the job clinical experience. Experience working as a Medical Assistant preferred.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days of hire. If travel to offsite locations is required, must possess a valid driver’s license and have a driving record without a significant history of accidents and/or convictions of moving violations. Nationally certified or registered as a Medical Assistant preferred.
